There's a flower shop on a commercial strip in North Ventura, the kind with a small lot out front where the delivery van lives. The owner had been fighting her 2015 Fiat 500L's ignition for a few weeks by the time I got there.
Not a full no-start, just that slow creep of a problem: she'd insert the key, feel it hang up, wiggle it slightly, maybe push it at a different angle. Some mornings it caught right away. Some mornings it didn't.
She'd already gone to the dealer. Their answer was a full ignition cylinder replacement plus a new key and reprogramming. She was one phone call away from booking that appointment when her delivery driver mentioned a locksmith might be worth a call first.
I got to the lot, looked at the ignition, and what I found was worn lock wafers, not a failed cylinder. The cylinder housing itself was fine. Over time and high mileage, the internal wafers wear down and the key blade stops seating cleanly, which is exactly the grabbing and hesitation she was describing. It mimics a cylinder failure because it feels like a mechanical problem, and it is one, just a smaller one than the dealer assumed.
I decoded the existing lock, replaced the worn wafers, and cut a fresh blade matched to the repaired cylinder. The remote head fob synced back up without any issue. I set the old wafers on the hood so she could see the wear for herself.
She was back inside making arrangements before I had my tools packed. The ignition ran smooth, the key seated clean, and she didn't swap a part that had years of life left in it.
