A guy in Oxnard, over near the Rice Avenue corridor, had just picked up a 2017 Fiat 500L off Facebook Marketplace. First car he ever bought on his own. Decent shape, fair price, one key. The seller told him to "just get a copy at the hardware store." That is not how a Fiat works.
Every 500L key since the model launched in 2013 carries a Megamos AES transponder that has to handshake with the BCM before the engine turns. A hardware store blank will physically turn the ignition and do absolutely nothing else.
He called the Fiat dealer. They quoted him almost two weeks of wait time because the key had to be ordered through Mopar, and the price made him reconsider owning a backup at all. He found us online and asked if the dealer quote was real. I told him it was.
I met him at the lot. Decoded the lock wafers, matched the SIP22 flip blade on my machine, and used a VVDI2 with the Fiat Megamos AES protocol to pre-code the new transponder from the existing key's chip data. The BCM accepted it clean, no full immobilizer reset needed because the original key was present.
Lock, unlock, trunk, ignition. All four functions matched the original. He drove off with two working keys, and that second key means his next replacement is an add-a-key job instead of the much longer all-keys-lost procedure.
