How the J30 Key System Works
Early Y32 Production
Basic security, no frills. Your 1993-1994 J30 uses a purely mechanical key with no transponder chip and no immobilizer system. The 4-button remote (FCC: A269ZUA078) handles lock, unlock, trunk, and panic, but the ignition key itself is just a standard cut blade. Simple and cheap to replace.
Mid-Production Refresh
The security level stays basic here, which is great news for your wallet. Your 1995-1996 J30 still runs a mechanical key with no transponder or immobilizer. The remote switched to FCC ID A269ZUA073, and the 1996 model added OBD-II diagnostics, but key programming remains straightforward on-board procedure.
Final Production Year
No surprises for the sendoff. The 1997 J30 kept the same mechanical key system with no immobilizer, reverting to the A269ZUA078 remote. Compatible with the same remotes as prior years, making parts easy to source even decades later.
Which Key Does Your J30 Use?
A standard mechanical key with a built-in 4-button remote for keyless entry. No chip inside, so replacement is quick and affordable compared to newer Infiniti models.

EZ Car Keyz vs. the Dealer
Your J30 key is one of the cheapest replacements out there. Here is how the numbers compare.
Common J30 Key Problems
Remote Battery Failure
J30 remote contacts corrode over time in coastal areas like Oxnard and Ventura. A fresh CR2032 will not help if the contacts are crusted green. We check internals and can replace the shell or full remote on the spot.
Key Blade Wear
We check the blade profile before anything else. After nearly 30 years of daily use, the standard mechanical blade on J30 wears down until the cuts are too shallow to engage the wafers in the ignition cylinder. The key starts sticking, then one day it refuses to turn. A fresh cut from the original code solves it; we carry the blanks on every truck.
Receiver Module Fault
New battery, new remote, still nothing on press. On 1995-1996 J30s, the keyless entry receiver inside the car often fails intermittently and blocks all remote signals. We diagnose on-site, reprogramming or module replacement.
Can You Program It Yourself?
Yes, you can program the keyless entry remote yourself using an on-board procedure. Insert and remove the key from the ignition 6 times within 10 seconds, manually lock and unlock the driver door, then press any button on the new remote within 5 seconds. The hazard lights flash twice to confirm. Keep in mind this erases all previously programmed remotes, so have every remote you want to use ready to go.
