Got a call from a guy over near Las Posas Plaza in Camarillo. He had a 1996 Infiniti J30, the last year they made them, and his only key had snapped clean off in the ignition barrel. The plastic head was in his hand, the blade was still inside the cylinder.
He sounded defeated. Already called around and a shop told him they'd have to pull the whole ignition lock assembly and rekey it. That's not wrong, exactly, but it's the expensive path.
I got there and took a look. The blade had broken about halfway, and thankfully it wasn't jammed deep. I extracted the broken piece with a hook tool, read the existing wafers in the ignition cylinder, and cut a fresh DA34 blank to match. Then I cut a second spare while I was at it because this is the kind of car where you don't want to be down to one key again.
The whole thing took maybe 25 minutes. Both keys turned smooth in the ignition, both doors, and the trunk. He kept testing the trunk like he didn't trust it.
No transponder means no programming step. Just precision cutting. He walked away with two keys for a fraction of what that shop quoted him for an ignition teardown. Sometimes the simple cars are the most satisfying jobs.
