How FX35 Key Security Changed Over the Years
S50 First Generation
A traditional transponder key with an ID46 chip and a high security blade. You insert this one into the ignition like a normal key, no push-button start. The NATS immobilizer checks the chip every time you turn the key, and we can program it on-board without needing external servers.
S51 Second Gen Early
An Intelligent Key smart fob with an ID46 chip, CR2032 battery, and push-button start. Infiniti moved to a proximity system here, so the key stays in your pocket while you walk up and press the button. Programming requires OBD-II diagnostic access and a PIN code, which we pull before we arrive.
S51 Second Gen Late
This is where security got serious. Infiniti switched to a Texas 4D transponder chip and added server authentication on top of OBD-II programming. That means the vehicle's ECM may need to verify the new key through Nissan's servers. We carry the tools to handle that, including Xhorse VVDI2 for server calculations.
Which Key Does Your FX35 Use?
A physical key you insert into the ignition. It has a hidden ID46 chip inside that talks to your NATS immobilizer every time you start the car.
A proximity fob that stays in your pocket. Your FX35 detects it when you grab the door handle and lets you start with the push button. There is a hidden emergency blade inside for dead battery situations.
Looks identical to the 2009-2010 smart key, but uses a Texas 4D chip with server authentication. Same push-button start, same emergency blade, but the programming process is more involved on our end.

Common FX35 Key Problems
NATS Immobilizer Failure
On 2003-2008 FX35s, NATS can stop recognizing your transponder key from a weak chip signal or ECM glitch. Engine cranks but will not fire, security light blinking. We test the key output and NATS antenna ring on-site, then reprogram.
Smart Key Fob Battery Drain
The CR2032 battery in 2009-2012 Intelligent Key drains faster than you would expect. Infiniti's proximity system constantly pings the fob, and if you store it near electronics or metal objects, the battery life drops even more. We check battery voltage before diagnosing anything else, a weak battery mimics more expensive problems. A fresh CR2032 costs a couple bucks and fixes the issue half the time.
High Security Blade Wear
Before we recommend a new key, we inspect the blade. Your FX35 uses a high security sidewinder blade that wears down with daily use, on the 2003-2008 models where you insert it into the ignition every time. A worn blade sticks, jams, or snaps off inside the cylinder. We cut replacements on a Silca Futura machine for a precise fit; we can decode existing locks on-site if the original blade is too worn to copy.
Programming Lockout
On 2011-2012 FX35s, wrong programming sequences or aftermarket tools lock the ECM and block new key registration. We use Xhorse VVDI2 with server calculation to reset. Locked out in Simi Valley or Camarillo? Call (805) 790-8162.
Can You Program an FX35 Key Yourself?
You can program the remote lock and unlock buttons yourself using an ignition cycle procedure. Insert and remove the key six times in ten seconds, wait for the hazards to flash, then press the lock button on your fob. But this only programs the remote functions. The ID46 transponder chip that actually lets the car start requires professional tools like Nissan Consult. Skip that step and your key locks the doors but will not turn the engine over.
No DIY option here. The 2009-2010 Intelligent Key system requires OBD-II diagnostic equipment and a PIN code for programming. You need a professional locksmith or dealer for both the proximity function and the transponder.
Same story as the 2009-2010, but with an added layer. The Texas 4D chip may require server authentication, which means even some locksmiths cannot handle it without the right tools. We carry Xhorse VVDI2 specifically for these server calculations.

Did You Know?
Back in 2003, Infiniti did something unusual with the FX35's security system. The NATS immobilizer was one of the first Nissan applications deployed in a luxury SUV, using encrypted ID46 chips to deter theft. At the time, most luxury SUVs relied on simpler security setups, but Infiniti pushed the FX35 ahead of the curve with encryption that was genuinely difficult to crack for its era.
