2006 Infiniti Fx35
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a smart key and how does it work on the 2006 FX35?

The Intelligent Key on the FX35 is a fob that does two separate jobs. The remote side handles lock and unlock through the buttons. The security side carries a transponder that communicates with the immobilizer when you go to start the vehicle. Both have to be working and properly registered for the car to start normally. There is also a physical key blade folded inside the fob body. That blade opens the door manually if the electronics fail.

Q: Why does the dealer charge so much for Infiniti key replacement?

A few reasons stack up. The key has to be ordered by VIN, so there is no walk-in same-day option at most dealers. Then there are separate charges for the fob itself, any cutting required, and the programming labor. Some FX owners have reported being told there is a diagnostic fee before any actual work even starts.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2006 FX35. Can I just use it?

Not without programming. A fob that has not been registered to your specific vehicle will not start the car, and there is no button sequence or ignition trick that pairs it on this system. You need diagnostic equipment connected through the OBD port to enroll the new fob. That said, if the fob you bought is the correct one for the FX35 and is unregistered, it can absolutely be programmed.

Q: My 2006 FX35 fob only works when I hold it right next to the door. Is the fob dying?

Usually it is the CR2025 battery running low. Reduced range is one of the first symptoms before the fob stops working altogether. Swap the battery, make sure it seats flat with clean contact, and test from a normal distance. If range comes back, you are done. If the fob still only works up close or starts throwing a key-not-detected warning after a fresh battery, the fob may need to be re-registered or replaced outright.

2006 Infiniti Fx35 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Sunday morning in Downtown Ojai, right by the yoga studio off Ojai Avenue. A studio owner walked out after teaching her first class and her FX35 just sat there. Buttons dead, no response, nothing. The Infiniti dealer was closed until Monday. Her next class was in two hours.

Mine was the only number that answered.

I pulled into the studio lot about forty minutes later. Tested the fob first. The CR2025 was completely gone, nothing left in it. Swapped the battery on the spot, and the remote functions came back, but the vehicle still would not recognize the key for start. That told me the fob needed to be re-registered, not just refreshed.

I connected through the OBD port, pulled up the key registration, and enrolled the fob back into the system. Tested lock, unlock, and confirmed the car started normally. Then I walked the range across the lot just to be sure, because I do not hand a key back until I know it works from a real distance, not just standing next to the door handle.

She made it back in time for her second class. The dealer comparison was an afterthought she brought up, not me. All I know is she did not spend her Sunday on hold waiting for a Monday appointment.

Infiniti Fx35 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How long does an Infiniti dealer take for a key replacement on a 2006 FX35?▼

Longer than most people expect. The Intelligent Key for this vehicle is VIN-specific, and dealers typically have to order it rather than pulling a blank from the shelf. Owners on FX35 forums have reported being told a few business days and then having to follow up multiple times before the key actually arrived. Once it does arrive, there is still shop scheduling, programming time, and usually separate line items for the fob, the cut, and the labor.
