How G20 Key Technology Changed Over the Years
P10 (1st Gen Facelift)
You turn this key in the ignition like any other key, but there is a chip inside the head doing the real work. Your 1995 to 1998 G20 uses an ID46 transponder chip paired with Nissan's early NATS immobilizer system. No remote buttons on this one; it is a straight transponder key that the car reads every time you start it.
P11 (2nd Gen)
Infiniti upgraded to a remote head key with three buttons for lock, unlock, and trunk. It still uses the ID46 chip and NATS immobilizer, but now your key also handles remote keyless entry with a CR2025 battery inside. The FCC ID is NHV2VWB, and all keys must be registered together during programming, so bring every key you have when we show up.
Which Key Does Your G20 Use?
A metal key with a thick plastic head that contains an ID46 transponder chip. No buttons, no battery. The chip communicates with your car's NATS immobilizer every time you start it.
Looks like a regular key but the head has three buttons for lock, unlock, and trunk. Inside is an ID46 transponder chip and a CR2025 battery that powers the remote functions.

Common G20 Key Problems
NATS Immobilizer Failure
Engine cranks but will not fire, or security light is blinking. Usually NATS is not reading your ID46 transponder, often from a corroded antenna ring around the ignition cylinder. We test transponder and ring on-site before recommending anything.
Key Blade Wear
Aftermarket blades wear faster than OEM, and once cuts are too shallow your ignition cannot read the pattern. That leads to no-starts or lockouts in a Simi Valley parking lot. We cut a fresh blade from the original code, not from your worn key.
Remote Fob Battery Drain
The seals on the 1999 to 2002 remote head keys are not great. Moisture gets in, the CR2025 battery drains faster than it should, and lock and unlock buttons start working intermittently. We check the battery contacts and seal condition first. a new CR2025 and a clean of the contacts is all you need; the circuit board needs replacing.
Can You Program a G20 Key Yourself?
You can program the remote functions yourself using the key cycle method with the trunk open. But this only pairs the remote signal. The ID46 transponder chip still needs professional programming with a locksmith tool.
The 1999 to 2002 G20 supports on-board remote programming. Insert and remove the key from the ignition six times within ten seconds until the hazards flash, then press a button on your new remote. This pairs the remote only. The transponder chip requires professional equipment to program.

Did You Know?
The Infiniti G20's NATS system was one of Nissan's earliest immobilizer implementations. It was adapted from the Nissan Primera and shared components with the Sentra SE-R Spec V. The G20 was essentially a rebadged Primera P10 and P11 for the North American market, making it one of the few Infiniti models that started life as a mainstream Nissan platform.
