1997 Infiniti G20
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How do I spot a locksmith who actually knows this car versus one who's guessing?

Ask one question before they show up: what does the key replacement process involve for a 1997 G20? A locksmith who knows this car will tell you it's a mechanical cut, decoded from the lock or duplicated from a working key, done on site, no programming needed. If they start talking about immobilizer resets, OBD connections, or chip pairing fees for this specific year, they're either reading from a generic script or padding the invoice. That's the tell.

Q: Will a replacement key work exactly like the original on a 1997 G20?

Yes, as long as it's cut correctly. The 1997 G20 key runs the door locks, ignition, and trunk lock mechanically. There's nothing to "sync" after the cut. If the biting is accurate, it turns. We test the key in every lock before we leave: driver door, passenger door, trunk, and ignition.

Q: I have one key left for my G20. Is it worth getting a spare cut now, or should I wait until there's a problem?

Get the spare now. One working key is an all-keys-lost situation waiting to happen, and cutting a duplicate from an existing key is the fastest, least expensive version of this job. Once that last key is gone, a locksmith has to decode or pull a cylinder to get the biting, which takes more time.

Q: My G20 key turns hard in the ignition. Is that a key problem or a lock problem?

Could be both. On a car this age, the ignition wafer tumblers wear unevenly, and a key that's been copied a generation or two down the line can be slightly off spec, which speeds that wear up. First thing to check: does the same key turn fine in the door locks but bind in the ignition? If so, the ignition cylinder is the more likely culprit.

1997 Infiniti G20 Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call on a Tuesday afternoon from a woman who was sitting in the Hueneme Beach parking lot, a short walk from the water, staring at a 1997 Infiniti G20 she could not get into. Her only key had snapped. Half was in her hand, and she assumed the other half was somewhere in her bag, but it wasn't. She'd checked twice.

She'd already called a shop on the mainland who told her they'd have to "program a new key" and gave her a number that made her laugh out loud. She didn't laugh long, because she was still stuck.

I pulled up with the van, walked over, and explained what she actually had: a 1997 G20 with a mechanical key, full stop. No chip, no module to talk to, no programming appointment needed. I decoded the lock cylinder, cut a fresh key blade to match, and had her door open and a working replacement in her hand in about twenty minutes.

She looked at the new key, then back at me, and said she thought it was going to be a whole production. It wasn't. That's usually how these older Infiniti calls go once someone actually knows what they're working on.

Infiniti G20 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Are you licensed and insured to work on Infiniti vehicles in Port Hueneme?▼

Yes. EZ Car Keyz is licensed through the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, the state body that regulates locksmith work here. We carry full liability insurance. For a 1997 G20 specifically, the job is a mechanical key cut, so the credentialing conversation is really about verifying you're dealing with a legitimate, insured locksmith who won't damage your lock cylinder or leave you with a poorly cut key that wears out your ignition.
