1998 Infiniti G20 MECHANICAL-KEY Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Got a call around 9:45 at night from someone near the Ojai Valley Inn. She was a pharmacist heading into an overnight shift and her 1998 Infiniti G20 had just died in the lot. Key turned, nothing happened. No crank, no dash lights, nothing.
She had already tried the usual. Wiggle the shifter. Turn the key back and forth. Wait a minute and try again. Dead.
I drove out and started with the basics. The key turned the ignition cylinder fine, so the lock wasn't the issue. Battery tested at 9.4 volts, way too low to pull the starter in. The G20's SR20DE is forgiving on a lot of things, but it still needs voltage to crank. Tested the starter relay and ignition switch contacts while I was at it. Both fine.
Got the battery charged enough to turn the engine over and it fired right up. The alternator was putting out, so the battery itself was the weak link. Probably been marginal for a while and finally gave out sitting in the cool evening air.
She moved the car under the lights closer to the building and went in for her shift. No tow, no waiting until morning for a dealer, no second trip.
The 1998 G20 has no transponder, no immobilizer module, no fob to lose pairing. Sometimes the problem really is just a dying battery. Simple car, simple fix.
