Got a call from someone off Rice Avenue in Oxnard, near those industrial parks that back up to the railroad tracks. She had a 2002 Infiniti G20 sitting in her office parking lot, completely dead to the key. Car would crank all day but would not catch. Security light on the dash was blinking like a metronome.
She told me on the phone she already tried her spare key and got the same thing. That actually told me a lot before I even showed up. Two keys, same symptom, means it is almost never the key itself. That points at the NATS antenna ring around the ignition cylinder or the BCM side of things.
I got there and plugged my Autel into the OBD port, pulled up the NATS module. Both her existing keys were still registered. The antenna ring ohmed out fine. Turned out the BCM had thrown a NATS communication error after her battery got jumped the week before. A voltage spike during the jump had confused the immobilizer handshake.
Cleared the NATS fault codes, re-initialized the transponder registration, and tested both her original keys. Engine fired on the first crank with each one. The security light went solid for two seconds and turned off, which is exactly what a happy NATS5 system does.
She did not need a new key at all. The whole visit was under 30 minutes and cost her a fraction of what a dealer diagnostic appointment would have run, and she never had to leave the lot.
