Guy near the Ojai Post Office Tower had a 1999 Infiniti G20 that wouldn't start. Security light on the dash blinking, engine cranking fine but refusing to catch. He said he'd been using a copy someone cut at a hardware store a while back, and it had worked for the doors and ignition turn, but the immobilizer finally stopped recognizing whatever weak transponder signal it had been limping on.
He called the nearest Infiniti dealer. They told him to tow it in, leave it, and they'd get to it in a few days. Parts order on top of that.
I drove out to him midday. Plugged my Smart Pro into the OBD-II port and pulled up the Nissan NATS protocol, because under the Infiniti badge this is a P11 chassis running the same immobilizer as a late-90s Sentra. Cut a fresh key on the NSN14 keyway using the bitting code, then ran the transponder registration to write the new ID60 chip to the NATS ECU.
The security light on the cluster went from blinking to off. Engine fired on the first turn.
He just sat there for a second with his hand still on the key, like he was waiting for something to go wrong.
Whole job took maybe 20 minutes. He kept the old hardware-store copy for the doors, tossed it on his keyring as a backup for the locks only. Paid a fraction of what the dealer quoted and never had to leave his car anywhere.
