1995 Infiniti G20
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long will a replacement key last on a car this old?

The key itself, as a piece of cut metal, can last as long as the car. What gives out first on a vehicle this age is usually the ignition cylinder or the door lock cylinder, not the key. If your current key has been wearing grooves into a tired cylinder for years, a fresh key cut to the correct specification can actually feel better than the worn original. Keep a spare.

Q: What if the new key doesn't work right after you leave?

We test it in every lock and in the ignition before we close the toolbox. If something is off, we find it on site. But if you get home and something doesn't feel right, call us. We stand behind every key we cut. On a car this age, if a new key starts fine but gets harder to turn over a few weeks, that's usually the cylinder telling you it's tired, not a problem with the cut.

Q: Can a locksmith make a key for a 1995 G20 without the original?

Yes. Two ways to do it. First option is decoding the existing lock, which means reading the cuts directly from the door or ignition cylinder without needing the original key at all. Second option is looking up the key code through the proper channels using the vehicle identification number and ownership verification. Either way, no original key required. This is a standard job for a mobile locksmith and it happens at your car, not at a shop.

Q: My 1995 G20 ignition is getting stiff. Is that a key problem or a cylinder problem?

Probably the cylinder. After 30 years, the wafers inside the ignition wear down and the tolerances loosen up. A worn cylinder can make even the correct key feel sticky or require a little jiggle to turn. Sometimes a fresh key cut to exact spec helps because the worn original has rounded edges that don't engage the wafers cleanly anymore. But if the cylinder is genuinely worn out, the key is only part of the picture.

1995 Infiniti G20 Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy in the South Surfside area of Port Hueneme. He had been living with a single key on his 1995 G20 for years and finally lost it somewhere between the beach and his front door. No spare. Lockout plus no replacement anywhere nearby.

He had already called one place that told him they'd have to order something and come back. He didn't want to wait.

I pulled up, had a look at the door lock, and decoded the cut right there. Ground a key to match, tested it in the door, tested it in the ignition. It turned clean. He stood there watching the whole thing take maybe twenty minutes from the time I got out of my van.

He mentioned he had looked into the dealer just out of habit. They wanted him to tow it in, verify ownership paperwork, and wait for a parts order. For a metal key. I didn't make a big speech about it. The car was running and he had a spare to copy in case this one ever walked off again.

Thirty-year-old car, South Surfside afternoon, simple job done right at the curb.

Infiniti G20 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on a 1995 Infiniti G20?▼

For a 1995 G20, the replacement is a metal key cut to your vehicle. There is no electronics package to worry about. What matters is the key blade profile matching the lock and ignition correctly, and the quality of the cut itself. We cut on professional equipment that holds tight tolerances, so the key works smoothly without hammering the wafers in a worn cylinder.
