How Q50 Key Security Evolved
V37 First Generation
OBD-II programming with server authentication is how we handle these. Your Q50 uses an ID46 (PCF7952) transponder chip inside a 3-button smart key, and the NATS immobilizer requires PIN retrieval before anything gets programmed. We read the PIN through the OBD port, cut your high-security blade, and pair everything in your driveway.
V37 Facelift
Same OBD-II and server auth process, but Infiniti updated the fob design and added enhanced encryption. The chip is still ID46 (PCF7952), and you might see FCC ID KR5V2G35T or NHVWKQ757T on the back of your fob. Programming is the same procedure as the earlier V37, just with tighter security handshakes we handle through our Autel IM608.
VZ34 Second Generation
This is where Infiniti stepped up the security significantly. The second-gen Q50 runs an ID47 (HITAG AES) chip with NATS Enhanced, and programming requires server authentication that is currently dealer-restricted for most scenarios. We will be upfront with you on the phone about what we can and cannot do for your 2022 or 2023 before we roll out.
Hybrid Variant
Programming on the hybrid uses OBD-II or EEPROM methods, depending on the situation. Same ID46 chip and 3-button smart key as the standard Q50, but the hybrid ECM adds a layer of complexity. We isolate the 12V system before touching anything, which prevents the kind of errors that brick modules.
Which Key Does Your Q50 Use?
This is the standard Q50 smart key with push-button start and proximity unlock. It has a hidden high-security emergency blade inside for manual door entry.
Updated fob design with the same functionality. Your facelift key may carry a different FCC ID but works identically to the earlier V37 smart key.
The newest Q50 key uses a laser-cut blade instead of the older high-security style. It looks similar to the first-gen fob but runs much heavier encryption under the hood.
Identical in appearance to the standard Q50 key. The difference is in how we program it, not what you hold in your hand.
Pricing by Generation
All prices include the key blank, cutting, programming, and testing; lockout service runs $95-$125.

Common Q50 Key Problems
Smart Key Fob Battery Drain
Q50 owners think the fob is defective when it dies every few months. Real culprit is proximity: storing the key within a few feet of the car keeps sensors pinging and drains CR2032 in weeks. Move the key farther at night.
NATS Immobilizer Sync Loss
First check on a 2014-2021 Q50 that suddenly will not start: the 12V battery. Low voltage or a recent battery swap can knock the NATS immobilizer out of sync with smart key. Standard OBD tools often fail here they cannot read the PIN. We pull the PIN directly and run a full relearn, which gets you back on the road.
Key Blade Wear
The high-security blade on Q50 takes a beating from daily use. Over time the cuts wear down just enough that the blade will not turn the emergency lock cylinder, or worse, it will not release from the ignition barrel. We laser-cut a fresh blade on-site using original key data, so you get a factory-spec replacement without a dealer visit.
Prox Sensor False Triggers
Your 2022 through 2024 Q50 will not unlock at the door handle, or detects multiple fobs when you have one. These proximity glitches need a diagnostic scan to isolate handle antenna, interior sensor, or wiring. We scan in Simi Valley or Camarillo.
Can You Program a Q50 Key Yourself?
No DIY option here. The NATS immobilizer requires professional tools with PIN retrieval and server authentication. Attempting it without the right equipment can trigger an anti-theft lockout.
Same deal as the earlier V37. Enhanced encryption means you need professional OBD-II programming with PIN access. No workaround for this one.
The second-gen Q50 runs NATS Enhanced with ID47 encryption. This requires server authentication and is currently restricted to dealer-level or advanced locksmith tools. No self-programming method exists.
The hybrid adds complexity with its separate ECM and HV battery isolation requirements. Professional OBD-II or EEPROM programming is the only path. Do not attempt this at home.

Did You Know?
Back in the 1990s, Nissan developed the NATS (Nissan Anti-Theft System) immobilizer for its mainstream lineup. Infiniti adopted it for the Q50 and kept evolving it through every generation, making it one of the longest-running OEM immobilizer platforms still active in a luxury sedan today. Over two decades of continuous development, and the bones of that original 1990s architecture are still in your car.
