I was in the Erbes Road Estates area finishing a different job when the call came in. A Q50 owner had parked near the Thousand Oaks end of the 101 corridor and walked back to his car to find the fob completely dead. No door response, nothing from the handles, just a locked sedan sitting there.
He had no idea there was an emergency insert key hidden inside the fob body. Most people don't until they need it. I walked him through popping the key out over the phone so he could at least get in the door while I drove over. By the time I got there he was sitting in the driver seat, car still refusing to start, looking at a key-not-detected warning on the cluster.
The fob battery was fully discharged. Swapped in a fresh CR2032, and the car saw the fob again. But the warning stayed on the cluster and the car still wouldn't start. That fault needed to be cleared through the OBD port before the immobilizer would cooperate. I connected my diagnostic equipment, confirmed the fob was still registered to the vehicle and hadn't lost its pairing, cleared the communication fault, and walked him through a normal start cycle.
He asked if the dealer would have figured that out faster. I told him the dealer would have had him towed in, put him in a queue, and probably ordered a new fob assuming the pairing was corrupted. That is the default move when they don't have time to diagnose. He got the same result in about forty minutes, in the parking lot, for a fraction of what that dealer route would have run.
