I was parked on Conejo Ridge Avenue wrapping up another call when the message came in from a Casa Conejo address. Q50 owner, smart key not responding, car would not start.
She met me in the driveway. She had already done the right thing: fresh CR2032, same issue. The push-button start was giving her a key-not-detected warning even with the fob sitting directly on the start button, which is the fallback method when the system cannot read the fob wirelessly. I pulled out the diagnostic tablet, connected to the OBD port, and navigated into the vehicle security system registration menu. While the system ran its access sequence, I prepped the replacement fob and transferred the emergency blade over so she would have a fully functional key, not just a programmable shell. The security access sequence on these takes a few minutes to complete, so I walked her through what I was doing instead of just staring at the screen.
Once access cleared, I registered the new fob and ran the full check. Push-button start, door lock, door unlock, and each of the remaining buttons on the 5-button layout. Everything confirmed working before I closed the tablet.
She asked how much the dealer would have been. I told her to call and get a quote sometime just to know. She said she already had, because she called them first and they wanted to schedule her for the following week with a tow since the car would not drive in. Coming to her in Casa Conejo the same day, for a fraction of that timeline and a fraction of that cost, was not a hard sell.
