First Generation (Early TA60)
Your early QX56 uses a transponder key with an ID46 chip (PCF7936 or Temic 8E) and the NATS immobilizer system. It is a standard 3-button key with a high-security blade that turns in the ignition. No push-button start, no proximity features. Programming is done on-board with a PIN code, which keeps things straightforward for us.
Mid-Cycle Update (TA60)
Your 2007 to 2010 QX56 uses a remote head key, still with the ID46 chip and NATS immobilizer. Infiniti updated the transponder in this range, but the programming method stays on-board with a PIN code. Three buttons, high-security blade, and a CR2025 battery in the fob. These are common lost-key calls for us, and the worn blade issue starts showing up in this range.
Facelift (TA60)
Your 2011 or 2012 QX56 made the jump to a smart key with push-button start. The chip changed to an ID47 (PCF7952), and the immobilizer upgraded to NATS v2. Programming now requires OBD-II diagnostic tools instead of on-board procedures. Four buttons, high-security blade, CR2032 battery. This is where things get more advanced, but we handle it on-site with no issues.
Second Generation (JA60)
Your 2013 QX56 moved to the new JA60 platform, which is the same vehicle that became the QX80 in 2014. It uses an ID47 chip, a laser-cut blade, and 4-button smart key with push-button start. Programming requires server authentication, which means higher security and a more involved process. We handle this one with advanced tools and server bypass capability.
Which Key Does Your QX56 Use?
A traditional key you turn in the ignition. It has a chip inside the head that talks to your QX56's immobilizer. Without the right chip, the engine will not start even if the blade fits.
Looks like a regular key with buttons built into the head. The remote locks and unlocks your doors, and the transponder chip inside lets the engine start. Same high-security blade as the earlier models.
A proximity fob that stays in your pocket. Walk up, grab the handle, and the doors unlock. Push the button to start. There is an emergency blade hidden inside for when the battery dies.
Similar to the 2011-2012 smart key but with a laser-cut emergency blade and higher security programming. This is the final year of the QX56 name before it became the QX80.

Transponder Failure
First check on a 2004-2008 QX56 cranks-no-start: the transponder. The ID46 in the head degrades, and after a decade-plus of use can stop communicating with NATS. We verify with a reader before cutting a new key, so you do not pay needlessly.
Smart Key Battery Drain
2011-2013 QX56 owners in Simi Valley and Camarillo think the smart key is broken when it is battery drain. Leaving the fob inside or near the door keeps it talking to the antenna and kills CR2032 fast. Fresh battery, keep fob away when parked.
Immobilizer Sync Loss
Your QX56 starts fine for years, then one morning the security light flashes and the engine will not turn over. This affects every year from 2004 to 2013, and it happens after a dead car battery or a battery swap. The NATS immobilizer loses sync with key's transponder, and it needs an OBD relearn procedure to get them talking again. We do this on-site in about 20 minutes.
High-Security Blade Wear
The high-security blade on 2004-2010 QX56 keys wears down from years of use. The cuts get shallow, the key starts sticking in the ignition, and it will not turn. Some folks assume the ignition cylinder is bad, but 9/10 it is just a worn blade. We recut or replace the key on-site and save you an unnecessary ignition repair.
Can You Program a QX56 Key Yourself?
You can program the remote buttons yourself using the 6x key cycle method. Insert and remove the key from the ignition six times within 10 seconds, wait for the hazard lights to flash, then press any button on the remote. This only programs lock and unlock functions. It does not program the transponder chip, so you still need a locksmith for the immobilizer side.
Same 6x key cycle procedure as the earlier models. You can pair the remote buttons at home, but the ID46 transponder chip still requires professional OBD programming with a PIN code. The remote pairing is the easy part; the immobilizer programming is where you need us.
No DIY option here. The Intelligent Key system on 2011-2013 QX56 models requires a diagnostic scan tool and PIN code to register keys to the BCM and ECU. There is no self-programming procedure for either the remote or the transponder. This one needs a professional with the right equipment.
