2010 Infiniti Qx56
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a smart key and why does it cost more than a regular key?

Your 2010 QX56 uses a smart key, which is a fob that communicates with the vehicle's security and ignition systems wirelessly. When you press the start button, the car and the fob exchange an encrypted signal. If the fob isn't recognized, the engine won't start. The fob also handles remote lock and unlock through its four buttons.

Q: How long does it take to get a replacement key through the Infiniti dealer?

Longer than most people expect. Dealers typically order the intelligent key by VIN, and lead times of two to five business days are common, sometimes longer depending on parts availability. Once the key arrives, you're still looking at an appointment, drop-off time, and the programming window at the shop. QX56 owners on forums describe situations where they were told a couple of days and then spent a week following up with the service department.

Q: My 2010 QX56 is showing a key warning on the dash and the start button isn't responding. Is the fob dead?

Start with the CR2025 battery. A low battery on these fobs often shows up as an intermittent key-not-detected warning rather than a clean failure. The system can be finnicky about battery voltage even when the fob still works at close range. If a fresh CR2025 doesn't clear it, hold the fob directly against the start button when you press it. That bypasses the passive detection and reads the fob at close range.

Q: Can I buy a replacement fob online and program it myself for the 2010 QX56?

No. The smart key system on the 2010 QX56 does not have a DIY relearn sequence. Adding a new fob requires diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port. You can buy a fob online and bring it to a locksmith to save a little on the part cost, but confirm the fob matches the factory FCC ID before you buy. A mismatched fob won't pair regardless of what the listing says.

2010 Infiniti Qx56 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked on Ventura Road one evening when I got a call from a woman in Blackstock, over in Oxnard. She had a 2010 QX56 and had been using it as her only key for years. She wasn't locked out, nothing was broken. She just finally decided she needed a spare and her husband had been on her about it since the summer. So she called the dealer first.

The quote they gave her was enough to make her start looking around. She found me through a friend who'd had Nissan work done and figured the platforms were close enough to ask.

I pulled up to her driveway with the fob already sourced. The QX56 that year uses a four-button smart fob with the factory FCC ID matching the factory FCC ID spec, and the dealer part number ending in ZQ31A. I had the right blank ready, ran the key registration through the OBD port with my smart key tool, read the PIN, and cut the blade to match her existing key.

The whole job ran about 30 minutes in her driveway. She stood there while I walked every button, tested the door handle touch unlock on both sides, and confirmed the push-to-start recognized the new fob without hesitation.

She saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer wanted. But more than that, she actually had a spare key before something went wrong instead of after.

Infiniti Qx56 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to the Infiniti dealer to get a replacement key for a 2010 QX56?▼

No. A mobile locksmith with the right Infiniti-compatible diagnostic tooling can cut and program a smart key on site, wherever the vehicle is. The dealer is not the only option here. The 2010 QX56 uses a smart key system that requires proper registration through the OBD port, and that is a standard job for a qualified locksmith who works with Infiniti and Nissan platforms regularly.
