Over near Elings Park in Santa Barbara, a guy had a 2004 QX56 sitting in his driveway with zero working keys. Classic story. Bought it used with one remote head key, never got a spare, and the original finally cracked along the seam where the shell meets the blade pivot. Moisture got in and corroded the board, but the PCF7936 transponder chip itself was still reading.
I pulled the chip from the broken housing on his tailgate. Still intact. That meant I could clone the ID46 data with my VVDI2 instead of running a full all-keys-lost procedure through the NATS system on the BCM. Full AKL on these requires a PIN extraction from the BCM (28596 module) and a timed security handshake that adds real minutes to the job.
Cut two new NSN14 blades, built two fresh CWTWB1U751 shells with the cloned chip data, seated new CR1616 batteries, and tested every button on both. Lock, unlock, trunk, panic. Then confirmed engine start with each key twice, cold.
He stood there turning both keys over in his hands like he was deciding which pocket to put them in. Went from dead in the driveway to two working keys in about 40 minutes.
The broken fob saved him time and money. Even a cracked key with a good chip inside is worth bringing to the appointment. Don't toss the pieces.
