1st Generation (A32)
Infiniti introduced the NATS immobilizer system here, making the I30 one of the earlier luxury sedans with transponder security. Your key uses an ID46 chip embedded in a standard blade with no buttons or battery. It looks like a regular metal key, but the chip inside talks to your car's computer every time you turn the ignition.
1st Generation Facelift (A32)
Infiniti stepped things up here with a remote head key that combines the transponder and remote into one unit. Same ID46 chip, but now you get three buttons for lock, unlock, and panic, powered by a CR2025 battery. The NATS system also got an update, so programming requires a PIN code on these models.

Transponder Chip Failure
The ID46 chip in your key can delaminate or lose its charge after 20-plus years of heat and humidity. Top reason a key that worked yesterday will not start your car today. We test on-site and cut a replacement in Simi Valley.
NATS ECU Glitch
Your key goes in, the security light blinks, and the engine will not turn over. This happens after a dead battery or a jump start that confused the NATS immobilizer module. We run through a key cycling procedure and PIN reset to get the system talking to key again. If the ECU needs deeper work, we have the Autel IM608 to handle it.
Fob Battery Corrosion (2000-2001)
People assume a dead remote just needs a new CR2025 battery. that is true. But on these 2000-2001 remote head keys, the old battery often leaks and corrodes the contacts inside the fob housing. If buttons work and not others, corrosion is the likely culprit, not a programming issue. We can inspect the board and replace the fob if the damage is too far gone.
Door Cylinder Actuator Wear
When power locks stop responding, first check is whether the problem is the remote or actuator motor. On 100K-plus I30s, actuator motors wear out and the central locking module throws false signals. If the fob programs fine, you do not need key work.
Can You Program an I30 Key Yourself?
You can program the keyless entry remote yourself using the ignition cycling method: lock the doors, cycle the key in and out of the ignition 6 to 10 times within 10 seconds until the hazards flash, then press a button on the remote. But the transponder chip inside the key still needs professional programming with EEPROM tools. The DIY method only handles the lock and unlock buttons.
Same deal as the earlier years. You can pair the remote buttons yourself with the ignition cycling procedure, but the ID46 transponder chip requires a PIN code and professional programming equipment. If you just need to re-pair your existing remote after a battery swap, the DIY method works. For a brand new key, call us.
