1996 Infiniti I30
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What kind of key does the 1996 Infiniti I30 actually use?

It's a metal key. No fob, no remote buttons, no battery. You put it in the ignition and turn it. The replacement process is cutting a new key blade to fit your specific vehicle, either by duplicating from a working original or decoding the lock if the original is gone or too worn to copy reliably. That's the whole job.

Q: My 1996 I30 won't turn over and I'm wondering if a bad key is the problem. How do I tell?

On a 1996 I30, a key problem usually shows up mechanically, not electronically. If the key goes in but turns stiff, or feels like it's not quite catching, or the steering column lock is binding, those are the things to check first. Try turning the steering wheel slightly while turning the key, that relieves column lock pressure and is the most common reason a key seems like it's failing when it isn't.

Q: I lost both keys to my 1996 I30. Can you still make a key without any original to copy?

Yes. All-keys-lost on a car this age is one of the more manageable jobs. The door lock or ignition cylinder can be decoded on site, and a new key gets cut from that information. No originals needed. I bring the tools to do this at your location in Ventura, so the car doesn't need to move anywhere.

Q: Can I just get a copy made at a hardware store for my 1996 I30?

You can, if your original key is in good shape. The catch is that hardware store duplicators copy what they see, so if your original is worn, the copy inherits every flaw. You might get a key that works today and starts sticking in six months. Decoding the lock and cutting to the actual code gives you a key that fits the way it was supposed to from the factory, not a copy of a copy.

1996 Infiniti I30 Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy up in the Hillsides in Ventura. He had a 1996 Infiniti I30 and had been driving on one key for years.

It was worn down to the point where the cuts were barely readable, and one morning it started giving him grief turning the ignition. Not stuck, just stiff and reluctant, like the worn key was no longer clean enough to push the tumblers consistently.

He figured he had two options: the dealer, who told him over the phone they'd have to look into whether they could even source a blank that old, or take his chances copying a worn key at a hardware store and hoping the duplicate worked.

I drove out to him. The original key was worn, but I decoded the lock cylinder directly rather than copying the worn cuts. That gave me the actual factory depths, not a ghost of what they used to be. Cut the new key to those specs, tested it in the ignition and both doors.

Smooth. First try. He had a proper working key again and a backup cut from the same code so he's not living on one key anymore.

The dealer conversation was a footnote. He mentioned what they quoted just to acknowledge how much simpler this turned out to be.

Infiniti I30 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

My key is worn down and hard to turn. Can you make a working replacement without a good original?▼

Yes. On a 1996 I30 this is actually a clean job. The key code can be read directly from the lock cylinder or the ignition without needing a usable original key. Once I have the correct depths from decoding, I cut a fresh key to those specs. The worn original doesn't set the standard, the lock does.
