Got a call from a woman near the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden who had a 2000 Infiniti I30 that cranked but would not fire. She described it perfectly: turns over strong, just won't catch. SECURITY light blinking on the dash.
She had already been to the dealer. They told her to tow it in, quoted a wait of several days for the key to come in and the programming appointment, and the total was going to be a good chunk of money. She said she sat in her kitchen staring at the quote for a day before searching for another option.
When I got there, I checked the key she had. NSN14 blade, but the transponder inside was dead. The PCF7936 chip had just given up. Twenty years on the original key will do that. The NATS5 system on the I30 reads the ID46 chip through the antenna ring around the ignition cylinder, and if the response is weak or missing, the ECM kills fuel injection. Engine cranks fine, just no spark, no fuel.
I cut a new NI02 key to her existing lock code, pulled the security PIN through NASTF, and registered the new ID46 chip to the BCM using the Smart Pro. Whole thing took about 25 minutes.
She turned the key, the SECURITY light went solid for a second and then off, and the car started. She just sat there with her hands on the wheel, like she was making sure it was real.
