I got a call from a guy over in Downtown Ventura, said he was parked near the courthouse and his only key had snapped off in the ignition cylinder that morning. Not bent, not worn down. Fully broken off inside the lock.

He'd already called the dealer. They told him he'd need a tow, a new cylinder, and a wait on a VIN-ordered key blank. The whole thing was going to take several days.

I drove out and found him standing next to a clean burgundy I30, looking at his options. First thing was the broken key extraction, which takes patience on a column-mounted ignition on these cars. Once that was out I had the blade profile to work from.

The I30 uses a transponder key, so I cut a new blade to match and then registered the transponder to the vehicle through the OBD port.
