How QX60 Key Security Evolved
L50 1st Generation
Infiniti launched the QX60 with a proximity smart key running an ID46 transponder chip and the NATS immobilizer system. Your key has three buttons, a hidden high security emergency blade, and a CR2032 battery. We program these through OBD-II right in your driveway, which means we plug into the diagnostic port under your dash and register the new key to your car's computer.
L50 1st Gen Facelift
Infiniti updated the electronics but kept the same ID46 chip and NATS immobilizer. The key looks and feels the same: three buttons, high security blade, CR2032 battery. Programming still goes through OBD-II, though the updated software requires specific PIN retrieval tools. We carry everything needed on the truck.
L50 Final Year
The last of the first generation QX60. Still uses the ID46 chip and NATS system, still programmed through OBD-II. One thing to know: all-keys-lost situations on these later models can sometimes require dealer server authorization. We will tell you upfront if that applies to your specific vehicle before we roll out.
L34 2nd Generation
This is where things changed significantly. Infiniti moved to the L34 platform with an ID47B chip and server-based authentication. That means programming requires a live connection to Infiniti's servers. We handle the key cutting and preparation on-site, but final programming on these newer models needs dealer server access. We are upfront about that from the first phone call.
Which Key Does Your QX60 Use?
This is a push-to-start smart key. You keep it in your pocket or purse and the car detects it when you grab the door handle. The hidden blade inside pops out for manual door entry if the battery dies.
Same smart key design as the earlier QX60 with refreshed internal electronics. Three buttons for lock, unlock, and liftgate. Looks nearly identical to the 2014-2016 key but the programming software is different under the hood.
Final version of the first generation smart key. Same three-button layout and CR2032 battery. Functions identically to earlier models but may have minor firmware differences that affect all-keys-lost programming.
The redesigned second generation key uses a newer ID47B chip with server-based security. Still three buttons and a CR2032 battery, but programming requires Infiniti server authorization.

Common QX60 Key Problems
Smart Key Fob Battery Drain
Proximity sensors are the culprit. Storing the fob near the vehicle (garage hook) keeps them pinging and drains the CR2032. Move the key 10 feet from the car at home. Burning batteries every few months? That is why.
Transponder Sync Failure
You replaced the battery or jumped the car, push-button start will not respond, but the fob still locks doors. Immobilizer lost sync with the transponder. Regular on 2014-2022 models in Simi Valley and Oxnard. OBD-II relearn on-site.
NATS ECU Communication Errors
People assume the key is bad. Usually not. NATS is losing communication with the diagnostic port, blocking all-keys-lost programming on 2017-2024 models. Often needs an ECU reset or PIN extraction first. We diagnose on the spot.
Can You Program a QX60 Key Yourself?
No self-programming procedure exists for this generation. The NATS immobilizer requires professional diagnostic equipment to register a new smart key. You need a locksmith or dealer.
Same deal as the earlier models. Infiniti did not build in any DIY key programming for the QX60. Professional OBD-II tools and PIN retrieval are required.
Still no onboard programming option. These late first-gen models may also need dealer server authorization in all-keys-lost situations.
The second generation QX60 requires server-based authentication for key programming. There is no DIY path here. This one needs professional tools with live server access.

Did You Know?
You would not guess it, but the NATS immobilizer in your QX60 traces its roots back to a Nissan security system first introduced in the 1990s. It uses challenge-response cryptography, meaning your key and your car exchange a unique coded conversation every time you start the engine. If the codes do not match, the engine will not fire. It is the same basic principle used in military communications, just scaled down to fit inside your key fob.
