Sunday morning near San Buenaventura State Beach in Ventura. A woman had come out from an early class and her 2017 QX60 was just sitting there ignoring her. Dead buttons on the fob, no chirp, door handles not responding to touch, and "I-KEY System Error" across the center display.
Infiniti dealer was closed until Monday. She had somewhere to be in two hours.
I got to her in about 40 minutes. First thing I checked was the fob itself. Popped the back cover off the KR5S180144014 and the CR2032 was completely flat, reading under 2 volts. But here's where it got interesting. I dropped a fresh CR2032 in, and the fob lit up and locked the doors, but push-to-start still threw "Key ID Incorrect." The BCM had lost the key registration. A simple battery swap was only half the fix.
I connected through OBD to the BCM, pulled the 20-digit PIN for security access, and re-registered her smart key to the NATS6 module. Then I walked every function: lock, unlock, remote start, liftgate, panic, and push-button start from the driver seat. Tested the Intelligent Key antenna reach from across the lot. All five buttons, all working.
She watched the whole thing from the curb, arms crossed, like the car might change its mind. It didn't.
She drove off with time to spare. No dealer wait, no tow, no Monday appointment. Just a parking lot fix for a fraction of what the dealer would have charged.
