Over in Olivas Adobe in Ventura, an Airbnb host flagged me down about her 2013 Infiniti QX60. The smart key shell had cracked along the seam and the lock button was misfiring. Sometimes it locked, sometimes nothing.
She had already called the Infiniti dealer. They quoted her a full replacement fob, cut and programmed. No mention that her internals might be perfectly fine.
I met her in the driveway with a replacement shell and my NSN11 Lishi for the newer Nissan/Infiniti keyway. Her fob was FCC ID KR5S180144014, part number 285E3-9PA5A. I popped the old housing apart, checked the circuit board and the battery contacts, and everything inside was clean. Chip good, antenna good, buttons just needed a fresh rubber pad and a solid shell to press against.
Swapped the guts into the new housing. Cut a fresh NSN11 emergency blade decoded from her original. Then the part that actually matters: tested all five buttons at distance, walked every door handle for the proximity unlock, checked the liftgate button, and hit the start button from the driver seat.
She stood on the porch watching. When the hatch popped on command, she just nodded like she had been holding her breath the whole time.
Her chip and board were never the issue. A new shell and blade, done on site, for a fraction of what the dealer wanted to replace parts that still worked.
