How G35 Key Security Changed Over the Years
V35 Sedan, Early NATS
OBD-II programming makes this one straightforward, but you still need professional tools. Your 2003 or 2004 G35 sedan uses a standard transponder key with an ID46 chip and Nissan's first-generation NATS immobilizer. The key has a high-security blade that requires code cutting, so a regular hardware store cannot duplicate it.
V35 Sedan, NATS v2 Upgrade
OBD-II programming still handles these, but Nissan upgraded to NATS v2 and now requires a PIN code pulled from the server. Your 2005 or 2006 sedan uses a remote head key, which means the remote buttons and transponder chip are built into one unit instead of being separate pieces. Same ID46 chip, same high-security blade, but the integrated design is more convenient and harder to lose half of.
V35 Coupe, All Years
OBD-II programming covers the coupe across all five model years. The coupe shares the sedan's ID46 chip and NATS immobilizer system, using a remote head key with a high-security blade. Sport trim models sometimes came with a leather-wrapped fob, but the internals and programming are identical.
V36 Sedan, Second Gen Transition
This is where things changed significantly. The 2007 V36 sedan jumped to a Texas 4D chip and a flip key design, and programming now requires server authentication through Nissan's CONSULT III+ system. It takes longer and costs more than the earlier years, but we handle it on-site with the right tools and credentials.
Which Key Does Your G35 Use?
A metal key with an ID46 transponder chip inside the head. Your remote is a separate fob. You need both pieces for full functionality.
Everything in one unit. The remote buttons and ID46 transponder chip are built into the key head, so you carry one piece instead of two.
Same remote head key as the 2005+ sedan. ID46 chip, three buttons, high-security blade. Sport trims may have a leather-wrapped fob but the electronics are identical.
A flip-style key with a Texas 4D chip. The blade folds into the fob body. This is the most advanced key in the G35 lineup and requires server-authenticated programming.
How Much Does a G35 Key Cost?
All prices include the key blank, high-security cutting, transponder programming, and testing; no hidden fees.
Us vs. the Dealer
Need more than one key? We program multiples on the same visit for less than the dealer charges for one.
Common G35 Key Problems
Transponder Failure
The ID46 chip inside your G35 key degrades over years of use, and when it does NATS will not recognize it. Engine cranks but refuses to start. We test the chip first; if dead, we cut and program a new key on the spot.
NATS ECU Sync Loss
On 2003-2006 G35s, NATS loses sync after a battery swap or failed programming without the right PIN. We connect through OBD-II and re-register your keys. Common call in Simi Valley and Camarillo after DIY battery work.
Fob Button Wear
The rubber buttons on 2005 to 2007 G35 remote head keys break down over time. The contacts underneath wear thin and lock and unlock buttons start working only when you press hard, or not. If the key starts the car, the transponder is fine. You just need a new shell or a complete replacement key.
High Security Blade Breakage
Your G35's titanium-alloy high-security blade can snap at the base. Half ends up stuck in your ignition. Do not fish it out. Call (805) 790-8162; we extract it, cut a new blade by code, and program a fresh key.
Can You Program a G35 Key Yourself?
You can self-program the remote lock and unlock functions using a simple insert-and-remove ignition cycle. But the transponder chip that actually starts the car requires OBD-II programming with professional tools. So you can pair a remote at home, but you cannot make a new key start the engine without us.
No self-programming option exists for the 2007 V36 sedan. The Texas 4D chip and server authentication requirement mean every part of the key, remote and transponder, needs professional equipment to program.

Did You Know?
You would not guess it, but the NATS immobilizer in your G35 traces its roots to a Nissan anti-theft initiative that reduced vehicle theft rates by over 70% in Japan during the early 2000s. The same core technology that protected Skylines on the streets of Tokyo ended up in every G35 that rolled off the line. It is one of the reasons the G35 remains one of the least-stolen sport sedans of its era.
