She called at 9:45 from a pharmacy lot off Cochran Street in Simi Valley. Her 2005 G35 wouldn't start. Push-to-start did nothing. No dash lights, no crank, just dead silence. She was heading into an overnight shift and the lot was already empty.
The dealer was closed. A tow would strand her without a car until sometime the next afternoon. She needed it running now.
I got to the Cochran Street corridor and connected my diagnostic tool to pull IMMO data from the BCM. The NATS5 system had dropped her fob pairing. The vehicle battery had been borderline for a while and a voltage dip during shutdown caused the BCM to lose its stored key registration. The fob itself, her KBRTN001 with the 46 chip, was fine. The car just forgot it existed.
I stabilized the battery voltage, then reprogrammed the fob through the OBD-II port. The BCM relearned the key ID. Car started right up.
She moved it under the lights near the pharmacy entrance and went to work.
The problem was never the smart key. It was a tired battery pulling the BCM's voltage low enough to corrupt the key memory. The dealer would have had her towed, kept the car a day or two, and charged her a good chunk more for the same diagnosis. She got it handled in under an hour, on site, in a dark parking lot on Cochran Street.
