First Generation (J50)
Infiniti launched the EX35 with a 3-button smart key, an ID46 transponder chip, and the NATS immobilizer system right out of the gate. Push-button start was standard on every trim. These early models paired with a 5-speed automatic, and the key uses a CR2032 coin cell that typically lasts 2-3 years before needing replacement.
First Generation (J50, Mid-Cycle)
Infiniti upgraded the transmission to a 7-speed for 2010, but the key system stayed the same: ID46 chip, NATS immobilizer, 3-button smart key with a high-security blade. The big change for locksmiths is that DIY remote programming was removed. These years require professional OBD-II tools for any key work, no exceptions.
First Generation (J50, Late)
The final year of the EX35 kept everything consistent. Same ID46 chip, same NATS security, same smart key design. PIN code retrieval is critical on this model year for all-keys-lost situations, and the high-security blade requires a precision laser cutter to duplicate correctly.
Which Key Does Your EX35 Use?
This is a proximity smart key with push-button start. You keep it in your pocket and the car detects it automatically. The emergency blade inside is laser cut and fits a hidden keyhole on the driver's door handle.
Same smart key design as the earlier years. Walk up, grab the handle, push the button, drive. The CR2032 coin cell inside the fob typically lasts a few years before needing replacement.
Final year, same key. Three buttons, proximity sensing, push-button start. If your fob dies completely, you can hold it flat against the start button to get the engine going using residual power.

Smart Key Fob Battery Drain
The rechargeable EX35 smart key battery is always working, listening for proximity signals, so it drains faster than owners expect. Weak cell means intermittent no-starts. We test fob output on-site and replace if the cell is beyond saving.
NATS Immobilizer Sync Loss
Key suddenly will not start, security light blinking. EX35 owners in Simi Valley and Camarillo call after a battery swap or jump knocks the key out of sync with the NATS immobilizer. We run the OBD-II relearn on-site, no tow.
High Security Blade Wear
People often think the fob is the problem when the real culprit is the emergency blade inside it. The laser-cut blade on 2010 to 2012 models wears down with use, and even tiny changes in the cut depth can cause the mechanical lock to stick or refuse to turn. We carry a Silca Futura cutter on every call, so we can cut a fresh blade that matches the original specs exactly.
Can You Program an EX35 Key Yourself?
You can program the keyless entry remote buttons yourself on 2008 and 2009 models using a key-cycle procedure in the ignition. But this only pairs the lock and unlock functions. The ID46 transponder chip still needs professional OBD-II programming to actually start the car.
No DIY option here. The 2010 and 2011 models require diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD-II port for any key programming, including remote functions. You need a locksmith or dealer for this one.
Same as 2010 and 2011. The 2012 EX35 requires professional tools for all key programming. No on-board self-programming procedure exists for this model year.
