2010 Infiniti Ex35
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a smart key and how does it work on the EX35?

The 2010 EX35 uses Infiniti's Intelligent Key system. The fob communicates wirelessly with the vehicle to verify it's an authorized key before the engine will start. It also handles remote lock and unlock along with the other button functions on the four-button fob. There's a physical emergency blade folded inside the fob body that unlocks the door mechanically if the battery dies or the fob loses communication.

Q: Why does the dealer take so long and charge so much for an Infiniti key?

The Intelligent Key for a 2010 EX35 is VIN-specific. The dealer orders it from a central supply point, waits for it to arrive, then schedules programming as a separate step. You're also typically paying for the fob itself, a labor charge for programming, and sometimes a diagnostic fee before any work even starts. Some owners have reported being quoted a diagnostic charge just to have the vehicle inspected before the replacement was ordered. We skip all of that.

Q: My EX35 starts fine but the fob buttons stopped working for lock and unlock. What's going on?

This is a common complaint on the Intelligent Key forums for this generation. If the vehicle starts without issue, the key is still paired and the immobilizer side is working. What you're describing is usually one of three things: a weak CR2032 that has just enough power to communicate at close range inside the cabin but not enough to reach the door antennas, a contact issue inside the fob, or interference from another key or device on the same ring.

Q: Can I buy a fob online and program it myself for the 2010 EX35?

No. The Intelligent Key on this vehicle requires professional diagnostic equipment to register a new fob to the car. There is no ignition-turn sequence or button trick that works on this system. Buying a fob online is fine if you want to source your own part, but you still need someone with the right tools to pair it. And the emergency blade inside still needs to be cut to your vehicle, so bring both pieces to whoever does the programming.

2010 Infiniti Ex35 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A woman in Camarillo Heights called on a Tuesday afternoon. Her EX35 had been sitting in her driveway since Sunday, and she'd been driving her husband's car to work while she figured out what to do.

The Intelligent Key had just stopped working. No warning, no drop, no obvious event. She tried a new CR2032 from the drugstore. Nothing changed. The car was showing a key-not-detected warning on the dash every time she got in.

When I got there, I tested the fob first. The battery swap she'd done was fine, but the key itself had lost its pairing with the vehicle. That happens. It can come from a dead battery that sat too long before being replaced, or sometimes it just drops registration on its own. Either way, the fix is the same: register a replacement fob through the diagnostic port and verify all functions.

I had a compatible fob in the van. Programmed it on site, confirmed all four buttons, and tested the emergency insert blade so she knew where it was and how to use it if she ever needed it.

She asked if the dealer had been an option. I told her sure, but she was looking at scheduling days out, probably needing the car towed in since she was hesitant to drive it, and paying considerably more once you add up the parts, labor, and diagnostic charges. She'd already been without the car for two days. She was glad to have it done in the driveway.

Infiniti Ex35 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How long does the Infiniti dealer take for a key replacement on a 2010 EX35?▼

Longer than most people expect. Infiniti dealers typically order the Intelligent Key by VIN from a regional warehouse rather than pulling one off a shelf. Owners in forum threads report being quoted two to three business days for the key to arrive, then waiting longer when it doesn't show up on schedule. Once the key is in hand, the dealer still needs shop time for programming and verification.
