In Thousand Oaks, over in the Conejo Oaks neighborhood, a guy's 2017 Q50 was sitting dead in his driveway on a Wednesday morning. He'd dropped his only smart key on the concrete the night before while pulling groceries out of the trunk. Didn't think much of it. Next morning, nothing. "No Intelligent Key detected" on the dash. Push button wouldn't fire. Door handles wouldn't respond to touch.
He tried holding the fob right against the start button, which is the emergency start method Infiniti describes in the owner's manual. Engine turned over that way, but the fob was clearly damaged internally. He could limp through the day but couldn't lock or unlock without the mechanical insert key, and the panic of having zero backup was real.
I got there during his kid's nap time. Opened the broken fob on his kitchen counter first. The board inside, the one marked with the KR5S180144014 FCC ID, had a hairline crack near the battery terminal. No saving it.
Cut the NSN14 emergency insert blade on a fresh 285E3-9PA5A fob, decoded his existing blade with my Lishi to match, then pulled the 4-digit BCM PIN through the OBD-II port and registered the new key. All five buttons tested clean: lock, unlock, trunk, remote start, panic.
He watched the whole thing from his garage in socks. His car never left the driveway. Dealer would have meant a tow, a loaner, and days of waiting. This was about 40 minutes.
