I was already in Thousand Oaks on another call when this one came in. A Q50 owner out in the Wildwood area had dropped his fob on his driveway the night before. It hit edge-first on the concrete. The fob looked fine from the outside, no cracks, no obvious damage. But that morning, the door handles stopped responding to his touch and the push-button start was showing a key-not-detected warning every other attempt.
He had already tried a new CR2032 from the gas station down the road. Same problem.
I pulled up to his place, opened the fob on the hood of my van, and found the issue pretty fast. The battery contact had taken a small bend from the impact. The new battery he installed was making contact, but just barely, and under radio-frequency load it was dropping out. I straightened the contact, reseated the battery, and cleaned the terminals.
Then I walked every function before calling it done. Touch unlock on both front handles, the interior button, lock, and the other buttons on the fob. Everything came back clean.
He had already looked up the dealer process. Appointment, possible wait for parts, loaner or tow, the whole thing. He was relieved it did not come to that.
One small mechanical fix, done in his driveway, and he was driving to work twenty minutes after I arrived.
