2012 Infiniti Fx35
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a smart key and how does it work on the FX35?

The 2012 FX35 uses Infiniti's Intelligent Key system. The fob communicates wirelessly with the vehicle so the car can verify it's an authorized key before anything happens. The fob also has four buttons for remote functions. A replacement fob has to be programmed to your specific vehicle using diagnostic equipment. A key that isn't registered to the car won't start it, regardless of how well the blade is cut.

Q: Why does the Infiniti dealer charge so much and break it into separate line items?

Because the process at a dealer involves separate departments touching the job. The parts department orders and invoices the fob. The service department bills labor for programming. Some dealers add a diagnostic fee just to confirm what key you need before anything is ordered. FX35 owners on forums have posted about being charged for diagnostics, then the key itself, then programming labor, and watching it stack up fast.

Q: My FX35 shows a key warning on the dash but the fob battery is new. What else could cause that?

A few things. First, make sure the new CR2032 is seated fully and the contacts inside the fob are clean and making solid connection. A slightly bent contact tab will cause intermittent read failures even with a fresh battery. Second, on these vehicles the antenna that reads the fob signal runs through the door handles and the start button area.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself or do I need a tech?

You'll need a tech with the right diagnostic equipment. The 2012 FX35 Intelligent Key system does not have an onboard self-programming sequence the way some older bladed-key vehicles do. Registering a new fob requires going through the diagnostic port with software that can communicate with the vehicle's security system. There is no ignition-cycle trick or button sequence that works on this platform. The fob you bought online is a valid starting point, it just isn't paired yet.

2012 Infiniti Fx35 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out near Blackstock, I got a call from a dad whose 2012 Infiniti FX35 fob housing had started cracking at the seam around the remote head. He could feel it flexing every time he grabbed it. He knew it was only a matter of time.

The problem wasn't finding a solution. It was finding the time. His daughter trained at a gymnastics facility in Oxnard four days a week, and he was the only driver in the house. When he called the Infiniti dealer, they told him to drop the car for a few hours. That wasn't going to work. He didn't have a few hours. He had exactly as long as practice lasted.

So I met him in the parking lot at 4pm while she was on the beam. I decoded the lock, transferred the working electronics from his cracking fob into a fresh replacement shell, and cut a new blade to the vehicle. Every button on the 4-button fob tested clean. The door handles, the start function, everything. Finished and packed up before his daughter walked out.

He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a number he wasn't happy about, plus the half-day he didn't have. He got the same result in a parking lot in the time it takes to run a beam rotation.

She came out asking about smoothies. She had no idea.

Infiniti Fx35 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How long does it actually take to get a replacement key through the Infiniti dealer?▼

Longer than most owners expect. Infiniti Intelligent Keys are VIN-linked, and dealers frequently have to order them from a central distribution point rather than pulling a blank off a shelf. Forum threads going back years show owners being told two to three days, then spending a week chasing the service advisor. Once the key arrives, you still need a shop appointment for the programming and verification steps.
