E84 First Generation

F48 Second Generation
The F48 X1 moved to a proper proximity smart key with push button start, built around the CAS4 and later FEM immobilizer with an ID47 chip. The fob carries 3 to 4 buttons, a laser-cut emergency blade tucked inside, and a swappable CR2032 coin cell. Because this generation is not online server-gated, programming runs OBD-II with proper BMW tooling, and Marco's San Diego van handles it at your curb.
U11: Online Server-Gated Smart Key
BMW's latest X1, the U11, sits on the brand's current online security stack. The fob is a 3-to-4-button proximity smart key with comfort access, a laser-cut emergency blade inside, and a swappable CR2032 coin cell. Every new key must clear BMW OS server authentication online before the immobilizer accepts it, so there is no offline path on this generation. Key Fob Battery Drain
Remote buttons stop working or the car ignores the key. The E84 fob pings the central locking module constantly, chewing CR2032s fast. Battery dies mid-drive, the immobilizer loses its challenge response. Fresh battery usually solves it.
EWS4 Module Sync Loss
Weak key battery or a 12V replacement done wrong knocks the EWS4 immobilizer out of sync with your transponder. Key icon lights, engine cranks without firing. Not a starter or fuel issue. We reprogram over OBD-II. (619) 876-1271.
High Security Blade Wear
First check on a jammed ignition is the blade itself. BMW HU100 laser-cut profile is precise, and cuts wear with daily cycles. Once tolerances slip, the blade catches inside the cylinder. We cut fresh to factory spec and, if needed, repin.
Proximity Signal Weakness
Owners blame the battery when remote range collapses. On 2014-2015 X1s the culprit is often a failing internal antenna in the fob, not the cell. Swapping a CR2032 changes nothing because the antenna is separate. We test signal output first.
Can You Self-Program an X1 Key at Home?
No onboard self-programming procedure exists for the 2013-2015 X1. CAS3+ immobilizer demands professional OBD-II diagnostic equipment to write a new transponder. Not a DIY job.
