Pre-Chip Era
The earliest Mercedes-Benz Gl-Class models used plain mechanical keys with no electronic component. Any locksmith or hardware store could duplicate these keys by sight. No immobilizer, no transponder, no programming required.
Enhanced Range Fob
The Gl-Class received an updated fob with improved radio range, allowing lock and unlock from further distances. The new design also improved water resistance of the fob electronics.
Security Refresh
Following industry-wide relay theft concerns, Mercedes-Benz updated the Gl-Class's smart key system with motion-sensor fob deactivation and reduced broadcast range when stationary.
Advanced Encryption Era
Current Gl-Class key systems use AES-class encryption with rolling codes and mutual authentication. Programming requires professional scan tools with real-time security server access.
Which Key Does Your Gl-Class Have?
A small metal blade hidden inside the smart key fob. Press the release button on the fob to slide it out. Used to manually unlock the driver's door when the fob battery is dead. Cannot start the engine on push-button-start models.
A high-security key blank with grooves cut into the flat side of the blade rather than the edge. These require specialized cutting equipment and are harder to duplicate. Found on Mercedes-Benz Gl-Class models with enhanced security.

Dead Key Fob Battery
GL remote stops responding or the truck cranks but refuses to fire. Rechargeable cell inside the SmartKey degrades, especially on early X164 fobs. We test transmitter output in Mira Mesa, swap the cell, and re-pair to the EIS without dealer pricing.
Gl-Class Will Not Start With Key Present
Root cause is a voltage drop. When the GL main 12V dies or gets disconnected, the EIS and ECU can lose their handshake with the SmartKey. Common on 2007-2012 cars after a jump start or battery swap. We scan and resync the immobilizer on-site.
Gl-Class Key Fob Range Has Decreased
Before we recommend a fresh key, we check the blade. The high-security HU66 sidewinder cut on the GL wears down with daily use, causing no-starts or lockouts. Most common on 2010-2014 cars. Fresh cut on the curb saves a full SmartKey replacement.
Can You Program a Gl-Class Key Yourself?
Mercedes-Benz Gl-Class: No on-board programming procedure exists. Mercedes-Benz locked this generation to dealer/locksmith tools only. Professional scan tool with up-to-date Mercedes-Benz coverage is required.
Mercedes-Benz Gl-Class: Fob button programming can be done at home. Enter the vehicle, close all doors, insert key in ignition, cycle ON-OFF the specified number of times, then press LOCK on new fob. Transponder pairing still requires a locksmith.
Mercedes-Benz Gl-Class: On-board key learning available. With a working key, cycle the ignition ON-OFF 3 times within 10 seconds, ending in ON. The security light will flash. Within 30 seconds, press any button on the new fob. Locks will cycle to confirm.
