How H2 Key Security Evolved
First Generation (Early/Mid)
Your early H2 uses a Texas 4D (ID44T) transponder chip inside a 3-button remote head key. The immobilizer is GM's Pass-Key III system, which talks to the BCM before it lets the engine fire. Remote pairing is done through an on-board procedure, and the transponder side is straightforward with the right tools.
First Generation (Late)
Your 2008 or 2009 H2 still runs the Texas 4D (ID44T) chip, but GM upgraded the immobilizer to PK3+. That means a slightly more advanced security handshake between your key and the BCM. On-board programming still works, and in an all-keys-lost situation, there is a 10-minute relearn cycle that can get you back on the road.
Which Key Does Your H2 Use?
This is the most common H2 key. It has a standard metal blade with lock, unlock, and panic buttons built into the head. The transponder chip is inside the plastic housing.
Same physical key as the earlier years, but the internal security is upgraded to PK3+. Looks identical, programs differently.
A plain transponder key with no remote buttons. Starts the engine and works the ignition, but you will need a separate fob for remote lock and unlock.

Common H2 Key and Ignition Problems
Security Telltale Failure
First check is the BCM connection. On 2003-2009 H2s the immobilizer talks to BCM through C2, C3, and C4; a loose pin or corroded contact makes the truck think no valid key is present. We test the circuit before recommending parts.
Remote Fob Battery Drain
H2 owners think the fob is broken when it is a dead CR2032 or a cracked aftermarket shell letting moisture in. The 2003-2007 fobs (FCC LHJ011) are self-programmable, so a new case and battery is a quick fix. Board corroded? We pair a replacement on-site.
Transponder Programming Lockout
H2 cranks but will not start, security light flashing. Pass-Key III rejecting the transponder signal, after a worn key or botched DIY programming. 2003-2007 needs BCM access to recover. 2008-2009 runs the 10-minute relearn; if not, the scan tool finishes it.
Ignition Cylinder Wear
The flat-face ignition cylinders on 2003-2006 H2s wear over time, especially with a heavy keychain. Wafers get sloppy and the key will not turn. We replace the cylinder on-site with an uncodeable replacement and program your existing key to the new hardware.
Can You Program an H2 Key Yourself?
You can self-program the remote (lock, unlock, panic) using the door unlock button and ignition cycle method. But this only pairs the remote functions. The transponder chip that actually lets the engine start requires professional programming with BCM access.
If you have lost every key, the 2008-2009 H2 supports a 10-minute relearn cycle. You insert the new cut key, turn to ON for exactly 10 minutes and 30 seconds, cycle off and back on, and repeat three times. Timing is critical and it erases all previous keys. If you are not comfortable with the procedure, call us.
Adding a key to a 2008-2009 H2 when you already have a working key is not a documented DIY procedure. You will need professional tools for this one. Give us a call at (805) 790-8162 and we will handle it on-site.

Did You Know?
Back in 2003, GM built the Hummer H2 on the GMT820 platform, which shared its electronics with the Chevy Avalanche and Cadillac Escalade. That means your H2's key fob programming procedure is nearly identical to those trucks. Same platform, same security architecture, same Texas 4D chip across the whole GMT800 family.
