Got a call from a guy over in Wilson Park in Oxnard. His 2004 H2 cranked for about two seconds, killed itself, and left the security light solid on the dash. He had already replaced the battery in his LHJ011 remote twice thinking that was the issue. It wasn't.
The remote and the immobilizer are two completely separate systems on these trucks. The remote does doors and hatch. The PK3 transponder chip buried in the key blade is what lets the engine run. Two different things, and people mix them up constantly.
I pulled up, checked his key blade, and the transponder pellet was cracked. You could barely see it, but the resistance value was drifting. The PK3 system on the 04 H2 uses a resistive transponder that the body control module reads through a sensor ring around the ignition cylinder. If the value drifts out of the learned range, the BCM kills fuel injector pulse after a short crank. That is the classic "cranks then dies, security light on" pattern.
Cut a new key blade with a fresh PK3 transponder, ran the relearn through the OBD port on the BCM, and let the 10-minute security relearn timer cycle through. Tested start, tested remote lock and unlock, tested the hatch button.
He had been quoted a tow plus a full day wait at the dealer. I was done in his driveway in under an hour for a fraction of that.
