How the H3 Key System Evolved
1st Generation (Early)
GM built the H3 on the GMT355 platform and gave it Pass Key III+ immobilizer security from day one. Your key is a 3-button remote head with a transponder chip inside that talks to the Body Control Module every time you turn the ignition. No push-button start here; just a solid mechanical key with embedded electronics that requires OBD-II programming to pair.
1st Generation (Mid)
GM kept the same Pass Key III+ system but added rolling code sync for the remote entry functions. That means your fob communicates with the BCM using a code that changes every time you press a button. Same 3-button remote head key, same CR2032 battery, same FCC ID L2C0007T, but the remote side got a little smarter.
1st Generation (Late)
The final H3 years, including the H3T pickup variant, carried the same Pass Key III+ transponder and L2C0007T remote head key through to the end of production. Nothing changed on the security side. If you have a 2009 or 2010, your key is identical in function to the earlier models, and we program it the same way through the OBD-II port.
Which Key Does Your H3 Use?
Every H3 uses the same key: a black plastic remote head with three silver buttons and a standard metal blade. The transponder chip is built into the key head, so this one key handles door cylinders, remote entry, and engine start all in one piece.
What Your H3 Key Costs
Price includes the key blank, cutting to your VIN, transponder programming, remote pairing, and on-site testing.

Common H3 Key Problems
Key Fob Battery Failure
The CR2032 in your H3 fob drains faster than expected on older keys where the housing has hardened. Stiff plastic makes the seam tempting to pry, which cracks the case. Buttons dead? Fresh cell and careful opening. Cracked case? We swap internals on-site.
Transponder Sync Loss
H3 cranks but won't fire. Security light flashing. Pass Key III+ transponder lost comms with the BCM, after battery swaps, fob damage, or for no reason. Fix is OBD-II reprogramming with a scan tool. We handle it in your driveway in Oxnard or Camarillo.
Rolling Code Desync
People assume the remote is broken when lock/unlock stop responding. Usually it's not. Rolling code between fob and BCM fell out of sync, common if the H3 sat or the battery died. You need a working fob to re-enter learning mode; a scan tool makes it reliable.
FCC/PN Mismatch on Aftermarket Fobs
First check on an aftermarket H3 fob that won't program: FCC ID and part number. Your H3 needs FCC ID L2C0007T and PN 10335583 series. Generic fobs online claim H3 compatibility but use different internals. Mismatch and the BCM rejects. We verify first.
Can You Program an H3 Key Yourself?
No. The H3 has no factory self-programming method for transponder keys. Despite what you might read in forums, you need a professional scan tool like the Autel IM608 or GM Tech 2 to program the Pass Key III+ chip. There is an unreliable manual method floating around for remote-only pairing, but it does not work on all vehicles and does nothing for the transponder that actually starts the engine. Did You Know?
The Hummer H3 shares its keyless entry system with the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon from 2004 to 2012, meaning fobs with the RPO AU0 option are cross-compatible between all three trucks. GM basically gave a rugged off-road icon the same guts as a midsize pickup. Platform sharing at its finest.
