Out near Ventura Harbor, I got a call from someone who'd been without a working key for about four days. He had one key left, the remote had stopped doing anything, and then the key itself stopped starting the car. He figured he'd just buy a new fob online, pop a CR2032 in it, and be done. I pulled up, got the door open, decoded the lock, and cut a fresh key blade on the portable machine right there in the lot with the harbor in the background. Then I connected through the OBD port and ran the all-keys-lost procedure, which wipes the old fob registrations and enrolls the new ones clean. He watched the whole thing from about two feet away, which I don't mind at all.
We tested locks, tested start, ran every button. Everything worked. He held up the fob that didn't work and asked if I could program that one too. I could, and I did. Now he has two.
The dealer option came up briefly. He'd already called them. The wait time alone was going to cost him another few days of being stuck.
