Got a call from a guy in Downtown Ventura whose H3 key snapped clean off in the ignition. Not at the head, not at the bow. Right in the middle of the blade, inside the cylinder, with the stub still turned to ACC.
He had already tried needle-nose pliers. That just pushed the broken piece deeper. By the time I got there, he was sitting on the curb scrolling through dealer wait times on his phone. Two weeks out, and that was just for the appointment.
I got the broken piece extracted without pulling the cylinder. The trick on these GM columns is patience and the right extractor pick, not force. Once the fragment was out and the cylinder turned back to OFF, I decoded the lock wafers on site and cut a fresh B111-PT blade with a new ID13 transponder chip. Programmed it to the PK3 system through the BCM using the 10-minute timed relearn, since his only other key was now in two pieces.
Then I paired a new L2C0007T remote, three-button, lock, unlock, and hatch. The on-board programming sequence on these is pretty quick once you have a working transponder key in hand.
He kept picking up the old broken piece and looking at it, like he was trying to figure out exactly when the crack started. Probably been there a while. Metal fatigue does that quietly.
