2006 Hummer H3
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How much more does all-keys-lost cost compared to just adding a spare?

More, on any vehicle. When you still have a working key, adding a spare is a quick job. When every key is gone, the immobilizer needs a full reset and new keys have to be registered from scratch. That process takes longer and costs more. The smartest move is getting a spare made now, while you still have a working key in hand.

Q: Do aftermarket remotes actually work on a 2006 H3, or should I stick with OEM-spec?

Results vary. There are aftermarket remotes floating around online for the H3, and some work fine, some don't hold up, and some ship with the wrong internals even when the listing looks right. The factory FCC ID on the fob matters here because not every generic replacement matches it. We use OEM-spec remotes verified for this vehicle so you're not running an experiment. And the key gets tested before we leave, not assumed good.

Q: My H3 remote stopped working at range but works up close. Is the remote dying or is something else going on?

Usually the battery. A weak CR2032 in these remotes doesn't kill the signal completely, it just compresses the range until you're nearly touching the door handle. Swap the CR2032 first, make sure the contacts inside are clean and making solid contact, and retest from a normal distance. If range is still short after a fresh battery, then we're looking at the remote itself.

Q: Can I program a replacement H3 remote myself, or do I need a tech?

There is an onboard programming sequence for these. It involves the door lock switch and the ignition in a specific order, and it works when you already have one functioning remote to start the process. If you're down to zero working remotes, that sequence won't get you in, and you'll need someone with diagnostic equipment to do a full reset and registration.

2006 Hummer H3 Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Casitas Springs, I got a call from a guy who'd dropped his H3 remote on concrete at a job site. Shell cracked clean across the back. The buttons still clicked, the truck still started, but the remote was doing nothing at range and he figured the whole thing was toast.

I pulled up, popped the housing, and the board inside looked fine. No cracked solder joints, nothing visibly broken. Swapped in a fresh CR2032 while I had it open, reseated everything in a new shell, and tested lock and unlock from across the parking lot. Worked.

He'd already called the dealer and gotten a number that made him wince. He didn't need any of that. The electronics were intact. What he needed was a new shell and someone to check the obvious before assuming the worst.

That's most of what this job is. Not always replacing things. Sometimes just diagnosing them correctly, on the spot, in the driveway.

Hummer H3 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to replace my 2006 Hummer H3 remote?▼

Call a mobile locksmith before calling the dealer. Dealer pricing on an H3 remote replacement, once you add parts, programming time, and whatever shop fees they tack on, gets expensive fast. With EZ Car Keyz, you get the remote cut, programmed, and tested at your location in Casitas Springs or anywhere in Ventura, for a fraction of what they wanted. No towing, no waiting for a parts order, no sitting in a service lounge.
