Got a call from a guy near the Oxnard Skate Park in Oxnard. His 2010 H3 had one key left, and the blade was so worn it barely grabbed the wafers anymore. He had to jiggle it three or four times just to get the ignition to turn over. Some mornings it wouldn't turn at all, and he'd sit there working the steering wheel lock back and forth, thinking the column was the problem.
It wasn't the column. The key blade was rounded off on the cuts, so the sidebar wafers inside the GM ten-cut lock weren't seating. That slow wear is the kind of thing you don't notice until it fails on you at the wrong time.
I cut a fresh Strattec 5911588 blank to code, not copied from his worn key, but pulled from the lock data so the cuts were factory-spec again. Programmed the PK3+ transponder through the OBD port, cloned the OUC60270 remote, and tested all three buttons plus the ignition cycle. The lock turned like it was new.
He kept turning the key back and forth in the ignition a few times, just feeling the difference. Then he looked at his old key and kind of laughed, like he couldn't believe he'd been fighting that thing for months.
Whole job, about 35 minutes in the parking lot. He drove off with two working keys and no dealer appointment.
