2005 Hummer H2
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a remote key and how does it work on the H2?

On the 2005 H2, the remote and the ignition key are two different systems working alongside each other. The remote handles your lock, unlock, and the third button function over a radio frequency to the body control module. The key blade has a transponder that communicates with the immobilizer when you turn the ignition. Both have to be in order for the truck to start and for the remote to work.

Q: A key broke off inside the ignition on my H2. What happens now?

First step is extraction. Getting the broken piece out without pushing it deeper is a precision job and it is something we handle on site. Once it is out, we inspect the cylinder. The H2 ignition cylinder from this generation has internal wafers that can get bent or displaced if the key snapped under torque. If the wafers are damaged, the cylinder will feel rough or sticky with a new key, or it may not turn at all.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2005 H2. Can I program it myself?

It depends on your situation. If you still have at least one working programmed key, the H2 from this era has an onboard procedure that can let you add a remote using the door lock and ignition in a specific sequence. A lot of owners have pulled this off successfully. But if you are all-keys-lost, that procedure will not work. You need a programmer through the OBD port to clear the module and register from scratch.

Q: My H2 remote works fine up close but loses range after a few months. Why does this keep happening?

Two recurring culprits on these. First, the CR2032 in the H2 fob housing from this period drains faster than people expect, especially if the housing seal is cracked and letting in humidity. Second, the fob housings on GM remotes of this generation are known for small hairline cracks at the corner clips that let the battery contact plate shift over time. Every time that plate moves even slightly, you lose consistent contact and range drops.

2005 Hummer H2 Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy from Channel Islands Harbor called me on a weekday afternoon. He had just bought the H2 used and the seller handed him one key, one remote, and a "good luck." The remote worked maybe half the time. The truck started fine but he wanted a spare and wanted the fob to stop being unreliable.

I pulled up to the harbor, and the first thing I did was pop the back of his remote. The CR2032 was original, still reading voltage but on the edge. More telling, one of the battery contact tabs was slightly bent outward from what looked like someone prying it with a flathead instead of a proper spanner. The contact was barely kissing the battery. That was the intermittent problem right there.

We straightened the contact, seated a fresh CR2032, and his original remote snapped back to full range immediately. Then we cut a second key blade and programmed a new fob as his spare. The whole thing ran through the OBD port at the truck. I walked both remotes through every button, tested both keys in the ignition, confirmed the locks responded at full range from the dock, and we were done.

He had been quoted a wait time of over a week at the dealer. He got the same thing done dockside in about an hour.

Hummer H2 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How many buttons does the 2005 Hummer H2 remote have?▼

Three buttons. Even if you never had the original because the previous owner kept it, that does not change what the truck requires. We carry the correct replacement, cut the blade to your vehicle, and program the fob so all three buttons work when we leave. You are not guessing at what you need when you call us.
