More, always. When you still have one working key, adding a spare is a quick programming job. When every key is gone, the immobilizer needs a full reset and new keys have to be registered from scratch. That process takes longer and costs more. A fresh CR2032 seated with firm contact should restore normal range.

I got a call from someone in Blackstock, over near the west side of Oxnard. She had two fobs for her 2007 H2.

One stopped locking the doors about a month before she called. Then the second one started going intermittent. By the time she reached out, neither was reliable and she was hitting the lock button four or five times just to get a response, sometimes walking back to physically check the door.

I tested her original fobs first. One had a weak CR2032 sitting slightly off-center, which is more common than it sounds on these older cases -- the battery retaining clip loses tension over time and the cell shifts just enough to break contact under vibration. Fresh battery, reseated tight, and that one came back completely. The second fob had a hairline crack along the back seam. Moisture gets in there, gets on the circuit board, and the range drops to almost nothing.

The fob she bought online needed programming before it would do anything. Paired it through the OBD port, tested all three buttons, confirmed range from across the parking lot. Then I tested the ignition key separately because on the H2 that system operates on its own.

She ended up with two working fobs and a spare. The online fob wasn't a bad buy, it just needed the pairing step she didn't know about. Total time on-site was under 40 minutes. The dealer had quoted her a wait of several days just to get the part.
