How Escalade Keys Have Changed Over 25 Years
1st Gen (GMT400)
Your first gen Escalade uses GM's PassLock theft-deterrent system. There is no transponder chip in the key and no VATS resistor pellet; instead, a sensor inside the ignition lock cylinder checks that you turned a valid key. The ignition key is a standard cut metal key with no buttons or battry about. Programming requires EEPROM work, which means specialized equipment, but it is a straightforward job for us.
2nd Gen (GMT820)
Your second gen Escalade continued with GM's PassLock theft-deterrent system. The ignition key itself has no transponder chip; PassLock uses a sensor inside the ignition cylinder. A separate 4-button keyless entry remote handles lock, unlock, panic, and remote start. Cutting the key is straightforward; matching it to the PassLock sensor which we extract on-site. If you have one working key, you can actually add a spare yourself using GM's 10-minute relearn procedure.
3rd Gen (GMT900)
Your third gen Escalade switched to a flip key with an ID46 chip and PK3+ immobilizer. Five buttons, a high-security blade that requires a specialized cutter, and OBD-II programming. This generation needs professional equipment to program, but we handle it in your driveway with no issues. The high-security blade means you cannot get this one cut at a hardware store.
4th Gen (K2XX)
Your fourth gen is where things got serious. This is a smart key with push-button start, an ID46 chip, a laser-cut emergency blade, and GM's Advanced Immobilizer system. Programming requires server authentication, meaning the key has to be verified through GM's online system in real time. We carry the equipment to do this mobile, which saves you a tow to the dealer.
5th Gen (T1XX)
Your fifth gen Escalade runs GM's Global B Immobilizer with an ID4D67 chip and a rechargeable battery inside the fob. No traditional blade at all. Server-based authentication is required for every key, and the rechargeable battery is not user-replaceable. This is the most locked-down Escalade key system GM has ever built, and we program it on-site with dealer-level access.
Which Key Does Your Escalade Use?
A simple metal key with a transponder chip inside the head. No buttons, no battery. You turn it in the ignition like a regular key, but the chip has to match your truck or it will not start.
A key with lock, unlock, and panic buttons built into the head. The transponder chip and remote are all in one piece, so you only carry one thing.
The blade folds into the fob body. Five buttons including remote start. The high-security blade has a unique cut pattern that requires professional cutting equipment.
A proximity fob that stays in your pocket. Push the button to start. There is a hidden laser-cut emergency blade inside the fob in case the battery dies.
The newest Escalade fob has a rechargeable battery and no traditional blade. It charges wirelessly on the center console pad. The most advanced key GM makes.

Common Escalade Key Problems
VATS Failure (1999-2000)
First check on a no-start first gen is the resistor pellet in your key blade. These wear, and when resistance drifts, the Escalade reads it as the wrong key. New key with correct resistance fixes it. Pellet reads fine, we look at the VATS module itself.
PK3+ No-Start After Battery Disconnect (2007-2014)
Owners think the key broke. Real problem: the immobilizer lost sync with the transponder. Disconnecting the battery on a third gen Escalade briefly can make PK3+ forget your key. We extract the PIN and reprogram on-site. Common Simi Valley after-weekend call.
Smart Key Battery Drain (2015-2024)
Your proximity fob is always listening for the Escalade signal, even inside your house. Constant handshake drains CR2032 faster than expected, sometimes every few months. Swap first. On 2021+ rechargeable fobs, confirm the console pad is actually charging.
Server Programming Lockout (2021-2024)
Too many failed programming attempts on a fifth gen Escalade and GM's server locks you out. Not a key or vehicle fault, a security protocol. Only a dealer reset clears it, can take days. Already triggered in Oxnard? Call (805) 790-8162.
Can You Program an Escalade Key Yourself?
You can program the remote fob yourself using a radio fuse key cycle procedure. This only programs the remote buttons, not the transponder chip. The transponder still requires EEPROM programming by a locksmith.
If you have one working key, you can add a new key using GM's 10-minute relearn. Insert the working key, wait for the security light to go off (about 10 minutes), then repeat with the new key. Does not work for all-keys-lost situations.
Same idea as the second gen. One working key lets you add another through an on-board relearn. Insert the working key, wait for the security light to turn off, swap to the new key, and repeat. You need at least one working key to do this.
No DIY method exists for the fourth gen smart key. Server authentication is required, which means professional programming equipment with GM online access. This is a locksmith or dealer job only.
Same as the fourth gen but even more locked down. GM's Global B Immobilizer requires server authentication for every key. No on-board procedure, no workaround. Professional programming only.

Did You Know?
Back in 1999, Cadillac did something unusual with the first Escalade. It was the first luxury SUV to use GM's PassLock theft-deterrent system, sharing the GMT400 platform with the Chevrolet Suburban. GM essentially took a full-size truck, wrapped it in Cadillac luxury, and created an entirely new market segment. Early key replacements were straightforward for any locksmith familiar with GM trucks, since the platform was identical under the skin.
