He had just gotten cleared by the cardiologist and was walking back to the parking lot when his Escalade went completely silent. Pressed the fob, nothing. Tried the backup start position, nothing. It was late afternoon at a medical office in Oxnard and he had prescriptions to fill before the pharmacy closed.
The dealer was already dark for the day. He called me.
By the time I pulled into the lot off Blackstock, he was sitting on a planter looking at his phone. The Escalade is a big truck and it looked fine sitting there. That was almost the frustrating part. Nothing visually wrong. Just a fob that stopped talking to the vehicle.
I got into the truck, pulled up the module data on my tool, and found the issue fast. The CR2450 inside his fob had corroded one of the battery contacts just enough that the cell was making inconsistent contact. The backup read function the vehicle uses when the fob battery is low could not get a clean signal. The fob looked fine from the outside.
New fob, programmed on site through the OBD port, tested every button function before I handed it back to him. The engine turned over on the first press.
From his call to engine running was just under an hour. He made it to the pharmacy with time to spare. He mentioned on the way out that he had almost just called a tow truck because he did not think a locksmith could handle a 2021. I get that a lot with newer vehicles. That is exactly why I carry the equipment I do.
