This is the only key type for your XTS. It is a black proximity fob with chrome trim that starts the car without inserting anything into the ignition. There is a small emergency blade tucked inside for manual door entry if the battery dies.

Can I program a new key fob myself on my 2015 Cadillac XTS? ▼

Short answer: partially. You can program the remote buttons yourself using the door key cylinder method. Turn the emergency key counterclockwise in the driver door cylinder 5 times within 10 seconds to enter learn mode, wait through the 10-minute cycles, then place the new fob in the center console transmitter pocket with the buttons facing the rear. That handles lock, unlock, trunk, and panic. But the transponder chip that actually lets your engine start requires professional OBD-II programming. What if my 2013 XTS smart key battery dies-will it still start? ▼

Short answer: yes, it will still start. The proximity sensor can detect your fob passively even with a dead battery, so push-button start still works if you hold the fob directly against the start button and press the brake. Your remote buttons will not work though, so no remote lock or unlock. Pop the fob cover off by sliding it, drop in a fresh CR2032 with the positive side facing up, and you are back in business. If the remote functions do not come back after a battery swap, the fob may need reprogramming. We stock compatible Strattec fobs and can handle that anywhere in Ventura County.

Does the 2019 XTS Vsport use the same key as base models? ▼

Short answer: yes, identical key. Every 2013-2019 XTS, including the Vsport with its twin-turbo V6 and AWD, uses the same 4-button smart key running at 315MHz with push-button start and GM's PATS immobilizer. The programming procedure is the same across the board. The only difference is that the Vsport's AWD setup may require the emergency blade to be cut specifically to match the high-security door cylinder. We verify that on-site before cutting. Why won't my new fob sync after the XTS learn procedure? ▼

Short answer: it is almost always a timing or orientation issue. The fob has to go in the center console transmitter pocket with the buttons facing the rear of the car. If you put it in backwards, the system will not detect it. Also, the door key cylinder sequence has to be 5 turns within 10 seconds, no slower. One thing to know: the learn procedure erases all previously programmed fobs after the third cycle, so have every fob you own ready to reprogram in the same session. If the remote learns fine but the car still will not start, that means the transponder needs OBD-II programming. That part is not DIY.
