A guy in Simi Valley, over in Sycamore Square, called me around 1 AM. His 2015 XTS was sitting in the driveway, push-to-start, and the only fob he had was completely dead to the car. Not weak. Dead. The DIC just kept throwing "No Remote Key Detected" every time he hit the button.
He had already pulled up flatbed prices on his phone. Had a dealer's service number saved for when they opened at 7. I told him to put the phone down and stay home.
I got there around 1:30. Connected my programmer to the OBD-II port and ran GM's SPS security access for the all-keys-lost procedure on the BCM. The XTS uses Hitag2 encryption, so the tool has to go online, authenticate through GM's server, and then write the new key data. His fob was the NBG009768T, 5-button with remote start. Standard Epsilon II stuff.
The part that got him was how quiet it was. No drama, no flatbed rumbling up the street at 2 AM, no waiting room at the dealership the next day. I programmed the fob, tested all five buttons, checked the passive entry on both front doors and the trunk, and ran a start cycle. Everything answered.
He just stood there in his driveway holding his coffee, watching the whole thing happen on his own car. The dealer would have been a tow plus a wait plus a much bigger bill. He saved a good chunk and never left home.
