Your first gen XT6 uses a 5-button smart key fob with FCC ID HYQ2ES and a CR2032 battery inside. It runs GM's modern keyless immobilizer with the Philips ID46 GM EXT chip, which communicates wirelessly with the car through proximity sensors. Programming requires server authentication, so professional tools are a must, but if you already have two working keys, you can add remote functions yourself at home.
1st Generation Facelift (C1XX Platform)
Your facelift XT6 keeps the same HYQ2ES smart key and Philips ID46 GM EXT chip security system. The OEM part number 13522879 carries over, and the fob is physically identical to the earlier years. The big change here is that 2024 models dropped DIY remote programming entirely, so every key function on a 2024 requires professional equipment.
1st Generation Update (C1XX Platform)
Your 2025 XT6 still uses the HYQ2ES smart key with the Philips ID46 GM EXT chip and Keyless Access passive entry. Same 5-button layout, same CR2032 battery, same high-security emergency blade. But like the 2024, there is no on-board programming option at all. Every key function needs server-authenticated professional programming.
Which Key Does Your XT6 Use?
This is a proximity smart key. Keep it in your pocket and the car detects it automatically. Push the button to start. The hidden emergency blade inside lets you unlock the door manually if the battery dies.
Same smart key design as the earlier XT6. Looks identical, works identical. The difference is under the hood: 2024 models require professional programming for everything, while 2023 still allows DIY remote pairing if you have two working keys.
The 2025 fob looks and feels the same as every XT6 before it. Keyless Access passive entry is confirmed. All programming requires professional server authentication, no exceptions.

Smart Key Fob Battery Drain
First check: where do you keep your fob at night? On a table near the car or in a garage bowl, proximity sensors stay active and drain the CR2032 in weeks. Move the fob at least 10 feet from the vehicle. Fixes most rapid drain on 2020-2025 XT6 models.
Programming Refusal at Dealers
Owners assume the dealer will program any fob. Not true. Cadillac dealers routinely refuse to program aftermarket or used fobs not from their parts counter. Bought online and turned away? Call (805) 790-8162. We program compatible fobs without attitude.
Transponder Sync Failures
XT6 cranks but will not start. Dash flashes a key warning or sits silent. Usually after a battery replacement (car or fob) when immobilizer loses sync with transponder. Not a dead fob: a communication mismatch. We re-sync on-site with server auth tools.
Hatch Button Malfunction
Microswitch behind the hatch button on the 5-button fob wears out, especially 2023-2025. Press and nothing, or works every third try. Other four fine. Hardware issue inside the fob. We transfer programming to a new shell or full replacement.
Can You Program an XT6 Key Yourself?
If you have two working keys, you can add remote functions like lock, unlock, and remote start to a new fob yourself. But this does not program the transponder chip for engine start. You will still need professional programming for that. The DIY procedure involves turning the emergency key in the door cylinder cylinder five times within ten seconds to enter programming mode.
