A customer in RiverPark, Oxnard, reached me on a Tuesday morning from her parking garage. She had exactly one key to her 2025 Cadillac XT6, and the fob housing had cracked clean open after it hit the concrete from the roof of her car. The shell split, the emergency blade snapped off at the base trying to use manual entry, and the blade tip was stuck inside her door lock. She had the broken housing in one hand and nothing else.
First thing I did was recover the blade fragment with a broken key extractor. Then I decoded the lock cylinder to get the cut on file so I could cut fresh metal.
The electronics inside the cracked fob were still intact. That mattered. Because she had a working chip in that broken housing, I could work from what was already paired to the vehicle rather than doing a full all-keys-lost reset from scratch. I transferred the salvaged internals into a new fob shell, verified the battery contact seating, and cut two replacement key blades to match the decoded profile.
She watched the whole job from about three feet away. When I showed her the chip that had survived the drop, she said she had been convinced it was all garbage. It mostly was, except for the one part that counted.
Two working keys, both tested on locks and start, done on site in about 45 minutes. The dealer had already been called and quoted a number that made her hesitate long enough to find me instead. She saved a significant chunk by not going that route, and she didn't have to arrange a tow or sit in a waiting room.
If your fob is cracked or waterlogged, don't throw it away before a locksmith looks at it. The part that actually talks to your car is often still good.
