How the DTS Key System Evolved
Early Production
You turn this key in the ignition like any other key, but there is a Philips ID46 (PCF7936) transponder chip inside the head that talks to your car's PKM module before the engine will fire. It is a 3-button remote head key with a standard blade and a CR2032 battery. Some early 2006 models have minor ECM variations, so we always verify the module location before we start programming.
Mid-Cycle
Same Philips ID46 (PCF7936) chip, same 3-button remote head key, same CR2032 battery. Cadillac did not change the security architecture here, which is good news for you. The blade is an HU100 type, and we program these through the OBD-II port under the dash using Autel or Xhorse tools.
Platinum and Facelift
The facelift gave the DTS a fresh look, but under the hood the key system stayed put. Still a Philips ID46 (PCF7936) transponder in a 3-button remote head key with a standard blade. The Platinum trim added some fob features, but the core immobilizer and programming method are identical to earlier years.
Final Production
The last DTS rolled off the line in 2011, and it kept the same Philips ID46 (PCF7936) chip and PK3 immobilizer system to the very end. Parts are still widely available, which keeps your replacement cost reasonable. We program these through OBD-II, same as every other year.
Which Key Does Your DTS Use?
A single key with the remote buttons built right into the head. You use the blade to start the car and the buttons to lock, unlock, and pop the trunk.
Identical key to the 2006. Three buttons on the head, standard blade, and a transponder chip inside that has to match your car's computer before it will start.
Same remote head key as earlier years. Platinum trims may have extra fob features, but the physical key and chip are the same.
Final year, same key. Three buttons, standard blade, CR2032 battery. Nothing changed from the original design.
The Real Cost of a DTS Key
Price includes key blank, precision blade cutting, transponder programming, and remote programming, all done on-site.
Us vs. the Dealer
Getting a spare made now costs a fraction of what the dealer charges, and you skip the tow and the wait.
Common DTS Key Problems
Transponder Chip Failure
Key in, turn, engine cranks but will not fire. Security light stays on. The Texas 4D chip in your key has stopped talking to the PKM module, common after a battery swap or if wet. We reprogram on-site or cut a fresh key with a new transponder.
Remote Fob Battery Drain
Remote lock/unlock stops responding? Nine times out of ten, dead CR2032. The DTS fob polls constantly and eats batteries faster than expected. Fresh CR2032, positive side up, usually back in business. Remote still dead? The fob circuit may need reprogramming.
PKM Module Fault
The Pass-Key Module under your dash decides whether your key is legit. When it fails, security light on, no start, even with a good key. Hits 2006-2009 most. We diagnose through OBD-II first: sometimes a reprogram fixes it, sometimes module needs replacement.
Worn Ignition Cylinder
We check the ignition cylinder first when a Simi Valley or Camarillo customer says the key works "sometimes." High-security tumblers in 2009-2011 DTS wear from daily use; symptoms mimic a bad transponder. Key slides in but does not engage. We tell on-site.
Can You Program a DTS Key Yourself?
Yes, GM's 10-minute relearn procedure works on every DTS year. You insert the new pre-cut key, turn to ON for about 10 minutes and 30 seconds, cycle OFF and back ON within 45 seconds, and repeat that three times. The whole thing takes 30 to 35 minutes. The catch: this erases all previously programmed keys, it only programs the transponder (not the remote buttons), and if you miss a timing window, you may end up with a no-start condition that costs $500 or more to fix at the dealer. If you want the remote buttons programmed too, that is a separate procedure through the Driver Information Center. We handle both for less than the dealer charges for one.

Did You Know?
You would not guess it, but the Cadillac DTS was one of the last luxury sedans to use a traditional turn-key ignition paired with GM's Northstar V8 engine. While other Cadillac models were moving to smart keys and push-button start, the DTS kept its straightforward VATS immobilizer system all the way through 2011. It marked the end of an era for traditional key Cadillacs before smart key technology took over the entire lineup.
