Got a call from a guy out in the Mission Oaks neighborhood in Camarillo. He had just landed after a business trip, grabbed his 2010 Cadillac DTS from the airport lot, and it would not start. Engine cranked fine, turned over strong, but the "THEFT SYSTEM" message sat on the dash and the motor refused to catch. He tried his spare key. Same thing.
He called the dealer. Thursday was the earliest they could look at it. This was Tuesday afternoon.
I got out to him in about 40 minutes. Connected my diagnostic tool to the DLC port and pulled the body control module data. Both his PK3 transponder keys were still registered in the BCM. The issue was the Passkey 3+ module itself had thrown a fault, likely from the car sitting with a weak battery in the lot for a week. The theft deterrent relearn timer had locked out.
I cleared the stored DTCs, ran a full Passkey relearn cycle through the BCM, and tested both keys. Each one started the car clean on the first turn, no THEFT SYSTEM message, no ten-minute lockout. I also checked the transponder ring around the ignition cylinder since those can develop hairline cracks on these D-body cars after a decade.
He drove home that same afternoon. The dealer route would have meant a tow, two lost days, and a bill that made this look like pocket change.
