Got a call from a parent over in Rancho Sierra Vista in Thousand Oaks. She was sitting in a school parking lot with her 2011 Cadillac DTS, key turning fine, engine cranking but refusing to start. The DIC was flashing "SERVICE THEFT SYSTEM" and the security light on the dash stayed solid.
She had one key. It was worn down, the plastic housing cracked near the blade, and the transponder pellet inside was barely held in place. Enough vibration over time and the PK3+ module in the steering column can't read the Philips 46 chip cleanly. That triggers the 10-minute theft deterrent lockout every time.
I cut a fresh B111 blade on site using my Triton, dropped in a new transponder chip, and connected to the OBD-II port with my Smart Pro to run the GM theft deterrent relearn. On these D-platform cars the Body Control Module (part number on hers was 25900041) handles the key registration directly. Added the new key, verified the security light cycled off after the learn, and test-started three times clean.
Whole thing took about 35 minutes in the lot. She mentioned the dealer had told her on the phone it would be a tow-in job since the car wouldn't start, plus a wait for the part, plus the programming appointment. That would have turned one bad afternoon into most of a week.
She drove out of there on her own.
